DescriptionThere are artists whom I commission because I know almost exactly what they will do with the assignment, and I'm commissioning them in part for their consistency of vision. There are other artists whom I commission knowing that I have no clue at all what they will do with the assignment, and if I try to guess, I will be incorrect. Steve Rude falls squarely into that latter category. I might have supposed that, asked to draw the Black Panther, Rude would give me a propulsive, energetically Kirbyesque take on the character -- say, something along the lines of Kirby's iconic cover to Black Panther #7. Instead, Steve went in the opposite direction, creating a dense, moody, atmospheric tableau playing with deep shadows and blinding light. This is why they call him The Dude.Social/Sharing |

There are pieces hanging in museums that don't look as cool as this does. More proof positive that Sir Rankins rules!

Just an amazing piece!! This drawing captures the essence of the Black Panther: mysterious, stealthy loner. Steve absolutely nailed it!!!

Steve Rude's work is something I really enjoy - I simply believe that the Dude is one of the greatest comic artists alive today. This means that, having already the highest possible opinion about his work, it's really difficult that one of his pieces may surprise me. Well: this piece DID surprise me. It is stunning and unexpected, and simply one of the best commissions I have seen on CAF. Chapeau, to the artist and to the owner.
