Description1928-2018Mickey Mouse is 90 years old. Created by Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks, this is one of the most iconic characters ever created, recognizable by everyone in the whole world even by his silhouette only, a character that changed the story of Disney that later, in the Disneyland anthology TV series, said: "I only hope that we never lose sight of one thing – that it was all started by a mouse." First appeared in the silent short cartoon “Plane Crazy” on May 15, 1928, to a test screening in a theater, then publicly debuted the same year on November 18 (now considered the official birthdate while it has been September 28, when the trademark granting Disney the name Mickey Mouse was issued, for a certain period of time) with the premiere of “Steamboat Willie”, one of the first animated shorts with sound. He appeared in many animated shorts and movies, voiced by Walt himself, such as “The Band Concert”, “Clockwork Cleaners”, “The Brave Little Taylor” and “Fantasia”, and also a star of comic strips and comic books where many artists defined his world and gave him life throughout all these years, Floyd Gottfredson being here surely the most important one. So, let’s celebrate the great little mouse. This is an illustration realized by Stefano Zanchi, a young (born in 1990, his first story for Topolino magazine published in 2012) but incredibly talented artist. I asked him an illustration inspired by a classic Gottfredson story, "The Seven Ghosts" , a story arc from the Mickey Mouse newspaper comic strip, originally published from August 10th through November 28th of 1936. The plot is about a town consumed by fear and paranoia over ghosts, and Mickey, Donald and Goofy investigate the source of the hauntings: Colonel Bassett's mansion. With the ghosts having driven away his family and servants, Colonel Bassett hires Mickey and his friends to try and get rid of the problem. Are the ghosts real ghosts? read the story (if you haven't yet) and find out :) The Seven Ghosts was also the key inspiration for the 1937 short Lonesome Ghosts. Getting to Zanchi's piece, it's truly an outstanding work... the beautiful composition, the smoothness of the lines, the beautiful colors, the lights and shadows, the ability to recreate the feel of the story while at the same time being himself. It's remarkable. Love it. Huge thanks, Stefano! Paper size: 29.7 x 42 cm Social/Sharing |

Beautiful homage to the Gottfredson's timeless classic, with great use of watercolors!

It is a beautiful picture overall, but Mickey's shadow really makes it. Fantastic.
