Description1928-2018Mickey Mouse is 90 years old. Created by Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks, this is one of the most iconic characters ever created, recognizable by everyone in the whole world, even by his silhouette only, a character that changed the story of Disney, who later, in the Disneyland anthology TV series, said: "I only hope that we never lose sight of one thing – that it was all started by a mouse." First appeared in the silent short cartoon “Plane Crazy” on May 15, 1928, to a test screening in a theater, then publicly debuted the same year on November 18 (now considered the official birthdate while it has been September 28, when the trademark granting Disney the name Mickey Mouse was issued, for a certain period of time) with the premiere of “Steamboat Willie”, one of the first animated shorts with sound. He appeared in many animated shorts and movies, voiced by Walt himself, such as “The Band Concert”, “Clockwork Cleaners”, “The Brave Little Taylor” and “Fantasia”, and also a star of comic strips and comic books where many artists defined his world and gave him life throughout all these years, Floyd Gottfredson being here surely the most important one. So, let’s celebrate the great little mouse. *** Here's a piece inspired by Floyd Gottfredson's comic strip adventure "Island in the Sky", first published in US newspapers between November 30, 1936, and April 3, 1937. The story is about Mickey and Goofy, who, after buying an airplane with the reward received for solving the mystery of the Seven Ghosts (see my Zanchi's commission inspired by that story), discover an island in the sky, home to Doctor Einmug, a brilliant scientist who has just discovered atomic energy. Unfortunately, Pete wants that formula, and Mickey will have to confront him to keep the formula safe. You know, I love Paolo's work (have a few pieces in my collection) and knew this was a subject he could do wonders with (even though it was not the only one I proposed to him, but really hoped we would choose this one). As soon as I got to see the preliminary sketch (see additional images), I felt this would have turned out magnificently. The beautiful and perfectly balanced composition was the optimal ground where Paolo could add more of his own magic with colors. And he did. The first time I saw the finished painting, I truly felt in awe. And still am. There's poetry in the colors, the effects, the additional character he chose to take advantage of (the clouds), playing with it, giving it life. For me, this is one of the best color pieces Paolo ever did. If not the very best. Published in "Disney d'Autore - Paolo Mottura" vol. 1 (Panini Comics, 2019). Huge thanks to Paolo!!! This is truly an icredible piece, just stunning. I also appreciate all the details you've provided for some of us who are not as seasoned with some of the Disney characters. You've got a real gem here IMO - CONGRATS!!
