Mickey Mouse is 90 years old.

Created by Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks, this is one of the most iconic characters ever created, recognizable by everyone in the whole world even by his silhouette only, a character that changed the story of Disney that later, in the Disneyland anthology TV series, said:
"I only hope that we never lose sight of one thing � that it was all started by a mouse."

First appeared in the silent short cartoon �Plane Crazy� on May 15, 1928, to a test screening in a theater, then publicly debuted the same year on November 18 (now considered the official birthdate while it has been September 28, when the trademark granting Disney the name Mickey Mouse was issued, for a certain time) with the premiere of �Steamboat Willie�, one of the first animated shorts with sound.

He appeared in many animated shorts and movies, voiced by Walt himself, such as �The Band Concert�, �Clockwork Cleaners�, �The Brave Little Taylor� and �Fantasia�, and also a star of comic strips and comic books where many artists defined his world and gave him life throughout all these years, Floyd Gottfredson being here surely the most important one.

So, let�s celebrate the great little mouse.

Here's a piece inspired by the story "Topolino e la Spada di Ghiaccio", the first part of an epic fantasy saga written and illustrated by the Master Massimo De Vita starting from December 1982 (Topolino magazine #1411-1412-1413) to January 1993.
Mickey and Goofy travel to the Argaar, a fantasy world in a parallel dimension, that is under the menace of an evil force (the Prince of Fog, a Darth Vader-like figure). As you can easily guess, they help the inhabitants of that world to save it from its doom. They need to deal with many challenges, weird creatures, inhospitable environments, as in the tradition of the very best fantasy.

What's peculiar, in these stories, is that the real hero is Goofy, with his particular way of thinking, while Mickey is his sidekick... and everything works wonderfully!

I wanted to celebrate the 90 years of Mickey taking into consideration different sides of the character, and I believe this is one of the most interesting.

Being one of the stories I love the most, I needed to put it in the hands of an outstanding artist and Francesco is sure one of the very best Disney around, my personal favorite among the ones that started working for Topolino magazine in the last 15 years. He happily accepted the challenge and created this watercolored gem.
