Description"The Seven Cities of Cibola" is one of my all-time favorite comic book stories EVER!Written and illustrated by Carl Barks, it's about Uncle Scrooge taking Donald and the nephews on a perilous trek in search of the fabled seven cities of gold. This story is also famous for providing Steven Spielberg and George Lucas with inspiration for parts of Raiders of the Lost Ark. One of the very best Scrooge's treasure hunts is based on a myth similar to Eldorado's. Based on the legend, after the Arab conquest of Merida in Spain, seven bishops crossed the Ocean to found the seven cities of gold. Many explorers launched expeditions to find these cities, without any success. The myth of the ship abandoned in the desert was also used by Barks in this story. So we do have a legendary place, a lead to the treasure (with the help of the Junior Woodchucks guidebook), and also the Beagle Boys. What's different from the other treasure hunts is that Scrooge will not make a profit (they will all forget what's happened) and also here the adventure finds Scrooge and not vice-versa. Francesco D'Ippolito did marvelous work on the illustration inspired by the story "Topolino e la Spada di Ghiaccio", so it was a natural choice to ask him to also do this one... he gladly accepted the challenge! Here's the (stunning) result, a much different approach from the previous one, here the artist chose to tell a story, capturing the moment of "discovery". You can see three different layers (also differently colored), the golden cities, our heroes (check the little details, the JW guidebook, the empty canteen after traveling the desert), the helmet of a conquistador with a glimpse of the treasure and the menacing shadow of one of the Beagle Boys. Bold choices (he could have played it much safer) that led to a terrific piece. Huge thanks to Francesco! Paper size: 29.7 x 42 cm Social/Sharing |

thanks! I bet you'll also appreciate most of the pieces I'll post in the next few weeks (all of them with Donald Duck, my personal celebration for his 85th birthday) ;)
