DescriptionBeen a while since I posted anything DC related, so changing that up here for a few posts, starting with this one by Kevin Maguire, my first piece by him!Got this directly from Kevin at Emerald City Comic Con in late 2021. Flipping through his portfolio I immediately liked it, and it took me back to those "Just Imagine Stan Lee" books. Was also cool just chatting with him about the book and comics in general, along with some of my fellow CAFers who were there as well! On top it says "Flash Concept #1" but there was only a #1, lol. No #2. This design was his first pass and they went with it. Overall some nice pencil illustration and figure work, and with any concept design piece or model sheet, always cool seeing the notes :) Isn't that cool that she has brakes incorporated into her costume in bell bottom form?! Here's to you, George H ;) Social/Sharing |

Yeah, man you was there! Along with Jason Hussa and Eranga, maybe another I'm missing? Fun times, no doubt. I'm George may be a TAD jelly :) Thanks, man, and all, for the comments!

I never read the "Just Imagine by Stan Lee" series of books, and this is the first time I have seen this character....but, man, does it work!!! Love it. Congrats.

Nice find, I recall the series and JUST IMAGINE books were pretty fun. This one quite colorful and eye catching. Congrats!

What a cool concept piece. I love the breakdown of the suit all the way down to the brakes. Love the thought behind the color combinations as well. This looks beautiful and congrats!

Love seeing this design and the notes/thoughts Maguire put into this design. Really cool effect, like a spectrem of light, with those tassels. Thanks for sharing my friend and always jelly (as ML said) of a design piece.

Ha ha, I may pepper a design piece in here and there, George, but not gonna be a focus - I'll stay in my lane. I think ;) And there are definitely some pieces you got I'm just a lil jelly of...but that's part of the fun, I think! Sharing wins, brother! Thanks for the add!

Great concept art with pretty colors to boot! Love the notes, like the bit about green not being one of the tassel colors and how Cameron Diaz's white costume from Charlie's Angels influenced his design. What a fantastic addition to your awesome collection!

Girl, the last time I saw you
You were running with veil
When I put you on the spot
Will you Stan Lee the same?
Stan Lee some imagination
Show Lee the Maguire of art dedication
I need to see just a reflection of his inspiration
Don't you rainbow on me
I'm looking for some run
Some fun strong enough to DC in
Everybody's looking bell bottoms
Strong enough with brakes on her feet
That never breaks down
I'll put my life on the line and believe what you say
I'll run out on a limb if you Stan Lee that way

I too love those chara-design pieces. Nice one.
(Though it's probably not the most practical costume to put on in time of crisis? But oh...she is a quick dresser...)

Pants, check. Boots, check. Knee, elbow, hand, shouder pads, check. Backpack, check. Helmet, check. Make sure those tassels ain't tangled, check.
You right, F! Luckily she can accomplish all that in a FLASH :) Thanks for the add, man - gave me a nice mid-day chuckle!

The stories in many of those "Just Imagine" books were not the most exciting in the world, but the art on nearly all of them was pretty darn strong. Maguire brought his usual magic to the project, and this concept art is very cool to see.

While I actually like the look of the costume design, come on bro, "brakes" on a human being?!? ROTFLMAO! The tassles would just slow her down as they disturb the air around them. This is definitely one cool looking costume visually speaking, but functionally speaking? Epic fail! Was anyone shocked that plastering Stan Lee's name on some DC Comics was NOT going to make for great comics? Thankfully Maguire's art still makes for a very pretty picture, but what were the editors thinking in allowing the idea to move forward?

Ha ha, part of what I like about the "brakes" is that's just some real over the top stuff! As far as overall design making it through? What's the saying? Form over function? :) We get that a lot in comics and tha's fine by me, lol. Thanks, Ruben!

Gorgeous design work by Kevin! Love the "simple" core of the white costume and the rainbow streamers trailing behind: a totally cool gimmick and it is little wonder there's no design #2! Beautiful colors to this piece (I remember reading that when he was submitting designs for the Silver Age Green Lantern costume, Gil Kane colored the one he liked the best and left the others in black and white... Editorial ultimately went with the colored version! :) ). It was a pleasure to have been there when you grabbed this gem, and it's wonderful to see it again as you post it here! Congrats, K! This is a really cool and special piece!

You know I love design and process. Especially when they give you the notes, too, so you can see their though process. Some of my favorite stuff you can get from an artist, and this is great. Love the bell-bottoms, too. Groovy!

Yeah, absolutely. We actually have our living room sofa which we all hate, because it's awfully uncomfortable to sit on, but it's vintage and fits really well with the vintage paperback novel cover paintings I hung all over the walls. Fashion over function, in this case! 😉
