DescriptionThe 80's Crusaders had started out with such promise (if not the greatest execution). It seemed to lose its way about half way through (along with the rest of the 80's Archie line). And then it just crapped out at the end (I find myself questioning if they were even trying - but I know that's mean). Such a sad end. I mean, they didn't even get a "last issue spectacular"!There came a point when I realized I was gonna have to put the commissions on hold for a while and as I was thinking about what I wanted the last one to be the idea of the "last issue spectacular!" popped into my head and I knew what I wanted. Mitch is pretty much my first choice for everything at this point :) Just a good, nice guy - and on top of that a very, very good artist. I believe "Ballard" is Latin for "bringer of the awesomeness". I asked him if he'd do a set of covers to give the Crusaders a proper send off. This is the first and's based on the classic Perez cover to Avengers #181. Lettering by the Irascible Chris Ivy (okay, so I'm no Stan Lee). And then there was color! Jovial Javi Solanes was kind enough to grace this cover with his wonderful colors. While I admit I'm a sucker for some classic flats Javi's brought some really nice shading to this one. The Shields, the whole top row of heroes. All look great. Even include some nice variations on the colors. I've also included a couple of my favorites below. Original size 11x17 ------------------------- In This Issue ... Coming off of the attack by the mysterious Omega Eight organization a truly momentous moment in Crusaders history has arrived! Called together by the great of the Crusaders, the Golden Age and Modern Shield's a veritable army of super heroes descends upon the team's New York City headquarters. The reason? To expand the team's roster to help deal with the new threats the team faces. The problem? The team's newly signed contract with the US Government! Agent Sheridan arrives to let the team know that there is a limitation on their membership. Who stays? Who goes? You're going to have to read to the last page to find out! (And who's that shadowy figure in that last panel? That would be telling!) This Issue's Cover ... Starting with the Agent Sheridan in the center sitting next to the golden age Shield, it's Fly-Girl, the Fly, Darkling, the Web, Firefly, She Fox, Red Ruby, Pow Girl, Mister Justice, Jaguar, the Comet, the Modern Age Shield - Lancelot Strong, Steel Sterling, Doc Reeves, the Green Cobra, Mister Midnight, Bob Phantom, the Fox, the Black Hood, Zambini and the Hangman. From one of my favorite George Perez Avengers covers! Moorhead and Ballard have done it again!

I believe it's "Cromulent Chris Ivy". As is this cover. Sweet.

Looking at these great Mighty Crusaders pieces just makes me wonder even more: Why doesn't Archie/Red Circle produce a contemporary Mighty Crusaders series, set in the present day with the original characters? Not their kids or any of that billshut, just the original characters set in today's times. Come on, Archie, Moorhead and Ballard are making you look like amateurs.

Well, there are an awful lot of White guys in this pic :\ The idea that Archie seemed to be aiming for with New Crusaders was fine by me. Kids in the main story with some old school cameos and the old farts in the back-up stories.
Archie also seems to be afraid of doing a proper ... not so much "grown up" as not totally kid safe book.
