DescriptionI'd enjoyed putting together the "last issue spectacular" covers that Mitch did for me so much that I couldn't help but think about building out that 80's Crusaders universe. The number of villains that Archie created during the 1960's was amazing. Most comics had 3 stories each and with almost no villains having any multiple appearances there were scores of villains everywhere. Hands down my favorite was the Deathless Smiler. Definitely let down when it turned out that this was just a disguise worn by the evil Wizard. He just had to be turned into his own character. The Spectre meets Galactus! This issue's cover is based on Kirby's classic Avengers #23. I hope Crusaders fans approve :) I'm a big fan of TJ's work (can't imagine how he doesn't have a regular gig!) and I think he did a wonderful job here. How maniacally ghoulish is that face on the Smiler :) Original size 11x17 ------- In This Issue ... Get ready for the greatest Mighty Crusaders thrill ride of them all as the Crusaders encounter the monstrous evil of the Deathless Smiler and the shocking secret of Alter-Earth! The Crusaders' world is rocked when the shadowy figure from last issue is revealed to be the Deathless Smiler! Once only thought only to be an identity assumed by the evil Wizard the team learns to their dismay that he is very, very real. The Deathless Smiler, the cosmic sorrow itself, has come to the Crusaders' world seeking vengeance against the Wizard for impersonating him. Can the team stand against this ancient, universal force? But that's only the beginning of the surprises as the true origin of the evil Wizard and Hangman that the team fought in the 60's is revealed. For the first time ever the Crusaders journey across the dimensions to Alter-Earth, home to the evil Wizard and Hangman as well as the noble British versions of the Shield and the Black Hood! Will things ever be the same? This Issue's Cover ... The Deathless Smiler glowering over Crusaders Comet, O Vingador, Darkling and Lancelot Strong - the Shield. Social/Sharing |

I got the Kang cover homage straight away but this is a nice twist on a classic.

Wow! TJ really knows how to put a comic cover together! Chris did his usual "Good stuff" too! Thumb's up on this!

I don't understand this "Imaginary" cover idea, Moorhead. What are you smoking? ;-) Also, cool - I see some Frias in my future.

I seriously doubt there's a single person at Archie Comics that knows these characters as well as you do. Slam dunk piece!
