From John Byrne's 1992 X-Men French Portfolio (Deesse Edition). John fully pencilled and inked this portfolio plate featuring Storm (Ororo) as she battles Proteus. In the background, you will see NightCrawler and Wolverine. This is John's re-imagined version of his classic cover to Uncanny X-Men # 127.

Just to clear up some rumors, these published pin-ups are John's pencils and inks. There are some versions featuring inks by George Perez that have nothing to do with the published art.

John did preliminary pencils for the portfolio. When the publisher wanted to create a special limited edition version of the portfolio, John submitted the "prelims" to be printed as the extra portfolio plate. The "prelims" are not finished pencils. The "prelims" were sold to collectors/dealers. 3 of the 6 "prelims" were inked by George Perez as a commission of the owner. Dealers will often have rough pencils finished by an inker in order to sell the art at a premium. George Perez is a star artist in his own right but that art was never published.

It's great to see another of those portfolio pages. This one is particularly breathtaking, an artist at the top of his game. If I ever win the lottery, I plan on having all the Deesse portfolio pages... if they look as good as this one ;-)
