DescriptionCrisis on Infinite Earths is my all-time favourite, multi-character epic comic book saga. Although like most people I was more of a Marvel fan, Secret Wars was fun but always seemed kind of hokey, what with the lame "Beyonder" character and the premise of the series being a way to promote a line of action figures. But Crisis, in spite of being less familiar with the DC Universe, still felt like I was watching a universe spanning epic saga unfurl before my eyes, where even the lesser known characters that were dying as their worlds crashed down around them, really FELT like these different earths were actually being destroyed and that these people were actually perishing.I always liked Supergirl, though I never had a particularly strong attachment to her. But due to the emotional and visual impact produced by Marv Wolfman, George Pérez & Dick Giordano on pages 38 & 39 of issue #7 (See additional images), I was left with tears welling up in my eyes. I could actually not only feel, but also HEAR the rage, in the scream that Superman yells out in the final panel of page 39. Such was the power of this scene and it has been seared into my memory ever since. A couple of nights ago, I unboxed this original artwork live on my YouTube channel. Yesterday, I showed it to my wife up close and explained what happened in the story by showing her all the pages that led to Supergirl's ultimate demise, and as I got to the panels you see in my additional images included here, she began full blown crying. She isn't a comics fan and doesn't know anything about the characters, yet the power of the storytelling and visuals brought her to tears. THAT is what I love about the comics medium more than anything else. Its power to make people actually FEEL things at times. I will never own any art from Crisis #7, so when I first saw that one of my favourite contemporary artists had illustrated a new cover for an exclusive reprint edition of this issue to be sold only through the FanExpo Toronto convention this year, I reached out to Tom's wife Nancy immediately to inquire about its availability. Ultimately, a deal was worked out, Byron Hamm packed and shipped the art as well as a few of Tom's signed comp copies of 4 different variants and I now own this great new version of the Crisis #7 cover, featuring the beginning of the scene which leads to Supergirl's ultimate death, as she flies off to confront the Anti-Monitor in final battle! With Crisis #7 being high on the list of one of my favourite single issues of all time and Tom Grummett being one of my favourite artists of all time, it really means a lot to me to own this piece. I hope you Crisis on Infinite Earths lovers and/or Grummett fans enjoy this! Social/Sharing |

The floodgates have been opened! A killer cover that only serves to underline the fact that you can't fight baddies with sweat in your eyes. Headband FTW!

For a moment when I saw this, I really felt old because I was sure the cover for Crisis 7 was not this one. then I zoomed in and saw "fanexpo denver variant". Not senile yet! Congrats on another exciting pick up!

I'm always intrigued by how a band might cover a pop song. A direct clone of the original version sometimes (read: usually) leaves me with a "what was the point of that?" reaction; it's usually (read: always) the ones who go off into a whole other direction from the original that make me sit up and take notice, and that's what Tom does here. Who would get the opportunity to do a Crisis 7 remake and -not- redraw that iconic, brilliant cover? Kudos to Tom for the great choice (and to you for picking it up)! I mean, I'm -right there- with you about the terrific Wolfman / Perez / Giordano storytelling of the original scene, but it is -SO- cool to see Tom's (also excellent!) sense of storytelling on full display here, capturing the drama of the moment (our heroes fallen! one rises up to fight on!) in a split second glance by a viewer. Rather than going with the drama and pathos of the Perez original, he throws us into the ferocity and adrenaline of the action that preceeds that. It's a "One Minute BEFORE" cover! :) But a revisitation of a beloved comic by your favorite artist? Yeah, BIG win here, bro! Love it! Congrats, Rubén!

Ruben! This is awesome, I did not even know this variant cover existed. What a great idea, with flawless execution by Mr. Grummett. A HUGE Congrats on this pick up!

Worlds in Crisis
Bring her violence
Come crashing in
In to with Supergirl
Painful DC
Pierce right through me
Can't you Denver fan?
Oh, my Supergirl
All I ever wanted
All the cover needed
Is here in my arms
Words are very unnecessary
Tom can only do art
Pencils own them
Inks not on them
Feelings are intense
Words are trivial
Pleasures remain
So does the pain
Worlds are feeling this
For Grummett it shows
Art I ever wanted
Art I ever needed
Is here in my arms
Worlds of DC, Monitor’s ready
He can only do harm

No one can rock a head band like Supergirl, well maybe Hulk Hogan. Hulkamania is running wild, brother!!!
As for the tears, my wife breaks out in tears everytime I open new art. Especially if the bill falls out on the floor and she sees it.

That face...elegant and determined at the same time! "Time to go to WORK." Digging this fresh take on a classic, and nostalgia clearly runs super high for you based on your description. Pretty cool that your wife got the feels, too...I think my wife might as well but I don't think I could get her to get through as many pages as needed to get there ;) Congrats, man!

Great cover by Tom and I'm with you on Crisis which remains a SH masterpiece (which could only have been better if Perez inked himself on the whole project). That last panel of Sup' silently screaming is perfection, plain and simple (I have another similar moment in the series which did it more for me, though).
You did the right thing buying both versions (even if, just for the record, finally seeing both, there is no question for me that I prefer the pencils).

Headband Supergirl is a real moment in time. Grummett so perfectly illustrates her GRIT in that facial expression. Love how the tattered cape is echoed with those lines across the top of the piece.

Such a historic and powerful cover! It was so much fun to watch your face as you unboxed it on your live YouTube show on Sunday night. You were obviously happy & excited (and rightly so) to see it gradually revealed in all its glory. Congrats on adding this beauty to your collection!

Grummett did an outstanding job conveying Kara's determination and strength. Supergirl's sacrifice in Crisis #7 has to be one of the most powerful death scenes in all of comics, and Grummett shows us once again that Kara bravely met her end without hesitation. Congrats on the incredible pickup!

Picked up CoIE #7 the week before I left for a 3-year stint in Japan and wasn't able to pick up #8 for 3 months. That wait felt like an eternity given the momentous impact of this issue. I always felt like this moment in the story should have been able to breathe a bit and deserved a splash. Thankfully, Grummett delivers one almost 40 years later.

OMG! I never saw this cover before but wow--Does it have impact! The fierce look on Supergirl's face as she flies up to do battle is stunningly powerful! I wish this cover HAD been used for more than just a variant--It's so badass! I love how it shows Kara's fierce determination to fight a foe more powerful than herself no matter the consequence! Fabulous find, Ruben, an instant classic!
