DescriptionHere's a lovely bold two-panel page (double half splash!) with tight Syd Shores inks. Boy, Gene could pose Daredevil like nobody's business! This is one of the first pages I bought when I started collecting OA, I believe from an ad in the CBG by A-OK Enterprises."Who ever heard of a PEACENIK SUPERHERO??" The story is "Behold...the Brotherhood!" and DD is battling Capricorn, a member of the Zodiac Cartel. I think those things Capricorn's using to swing Daredevil around are meant to be goat's horns, but they seem to grow out of his eye-mask and are more like tentacles. Whatever. Capricorn asks the question above to DD on this page, but it turns not to be rhetorical. Daredevil's thoughtfulness and refusal to engage in the fight is the key - two pages later one of the Brotherhood declares, "The red-masked one's heart is not in this conflict! There can be no just settling of the scales!" And like that, the fight is over. The issue had a Feb. 1971 cover date. Size 10.5 x 15.5 inches. Lettering Sam Rosen, coloring credited to Mimi Gold on GCD. An interesting side note is that long-time Colan/Daredevil inker Syd Shores was Gene Colan's mentor when Gene came into the industry in 1946, and Colan repeatedly expressed his gratitude in interviews. Shores died in his late fifties just two years after this issue was published. Social/Sharing |

Fantastic page. Colan could do anything with anatomy and get away with it. Shores inks were always great on Colan.

What a fantastic page! Gene Colan’s penchant for wacky anatomy simultaneously gave him the ability to pose Daredevil with such fluidity and strength and that is on full display here. The bold, double half-splash layout really emphasizes the action and intensity of the moment. Syd Shores’ tight inks, which I adore over Colan on Daredevil, add a layer of sharpness and clarity that brings everything into focus. The moment with Capricorn’s question is such an intriguing one: "Who ever heard of a PEACENIK SUPERHERO??", and you can feel the conflict in Daredevil’s decision not to engage in the fight. That thoughtful, introspective approach really makes this page stand out. It’s a perfect example of Colan’s genius in blending action with deeper character moments!

Great comment, thanks Ruben! I think Colan's anatomy sometimes looks wacky because he was fantastic at expressing bodies in motion. Look at photos of athletes in extreme movement and you see bones bending, joints hyperextending, and all sorts of improbabilities. The key was he needed the right inker to be able to decipher his pencilling, and not just trace his pencil strokes. Shores and Palmer were two of those inkers.
