DescriptionI'm not sure I have ever used the word 'grail' in any of my gallery updates, but when it comes to the lovely Ms. Day, I really do consider this the 'grail' of my Carol Day collection.I won't go into deep detail about Carol Day or its creator, David Wright...mainly because I've done so already numerous times in this gallery and in an article I wrote for the CFA-APA that I've shared with many other collectors. Needless to say, I'm smitten. As to this piece - what do I think makes it so special? It's absolutely luminescent. Which is no surprise, given Wright's absolute mastery in dynamically utilizing light and shade. But, this piece takes things to another level - Carol is lit from within in the first panel given her romantic encounter with Lance Hallam...and then we move to her being lit from without by the moon in the second panel. By the time we get to the third panel, her friend, Nora, is being lit by both. In addition to Wright's use of light to drive the emotion within the piece, he couples that with an extreme use of feathery detail to gently disperse the light source amidst the quietness of a late night conversation between friends. You can almost 'hear' how quiet and late it as they begin to talk. I know I'm gushing...but I really think this is an extraordinary piece of art, no matter that it comes in the form of a serialized strip. Mr. Howland...thank you. Social/Sharing |

Mamamia - what did it cost to pry this away from Mark? One of the great Carol Day strips for sure.

Major congrats Chris, this one and 111 were always my favorites! Glad to see it ended in your collection, you can retire now from looking for anymore Carol Days, because you now have the best.

While I've heard of Carol Day I have to admit I don't really know anything about the strip or its creator--but wow, this knocked me out. That middle panel is something I could stare at again and again, just a truly gorgeous example of masterful black and white storytelling. Congrats!

One day we'll have to shake a leg and then an arm, Chris. If she can't hang on my wall any longer, there is no wall but yours I'd rather have her hang on.

Enchanting...truly among the best Carol Day pieces. The lighting is beautiful and I agree it seems brighter than one would think you achieve with just black ink on paper. I have a Frank King Gasoline Alley daily where he plays with the light in a similar fashion. By changing the camera angle, you get the sense of the light coming from the second panel into the first and from first into the second. It gives that visual/subconscious trick of increased light. The final panel with the silhouette lit with pure white background makes it seem even brighter. Truly a master of black and white, the light and the dark.

While Carol Day #419 is my favorite and I have two that I won't be giving up, this is a stunning example of David Wright's skills. His work is breathtaking. Congratulations. It is lovely.

I love Wright's Carol Day pieces but this is one that exceeds most of his others. Gorgeous.

This Carol Day strip gets better looking every time I look at it. Truly a masterpiece of the strip medium. No one did it better than Wright!
