DescriptionYardbird (World War 2 Armed Forces slang for basic trainee) Private Snuffy Smith and ex-moonshiner is proudly doing his duty promoting the sale of United Sates Defense Bonds and Stamps. He has attracted the attention and support of some characters from King Features' Sunday Funnies strips. Look closely and you will find Tillie, The Phantom, The Lone Ranger, Popeye and Wimpy, Hans and Fritz, Jiggs, "Mac", Prince Valent, Dagwood, Casper, Mickey and Donald. Slogans to buy War Bonds were sprinkled throughout the comic section every week. The obverse side features the American Flag above the Pledge of Allegiance. This pamphlet was obtained from an elderly lady who obtained it from a Yardbird military surplus store in Chehalis, Washington in the mid 40's. Perhaps it was a newspaper premium. Notice that Donald is done in the Al Taliaferro style.Social/Sharing |
