DescriptionWhat a cover! A pivotal event in Aquaman’s history, depicting the aftermath of the Death of a Prince. My criteria for getting a great Aquaman cover is firmly met here: a main villain (Black Manta), some kind of aquatic animal (octopus), and costumed hero (Aquaman in distress), all of which were incredibly rendered by Aparo. Throw in a sunken and rotting battleship, a barracuda, some hench-divers and some bubbles, and its the quintessential Aquaman cover! A note on the numbering... the Aquaman series that ran through issue #56 ended in 1971... oh those Nick Cardy covers are soooo good. This story in issue #57 was published in 1977, continuing the story from Adventure Comics #452 where Black Manta kills Aquababy. Adventure Comics was the DC equivalent of the Isle of Misfit Toys, allowing orphaned DC heroes a home to have their own mini-runs (Spectre and Black Orchid are great examples). Aquaman's move to his own series was short-lived, running only six more issues to #63 as part of the aftermath of the DC Implosion of 1978, before returning "secondary feature" status in Adventure Comics #460. 57 issues in and they are still trying to gaslight us into thinking it's something we wanted!

This is a great one for sure !! When Aparo started toning down some of the psychedelic looking aspects of drawing the Aquaman stories, he really started making Aquaman his own.

Drama filled just the way Aparo likes to draw his covers! The concerned shocked look on Aquaman is justified as the tentacles have turned on him! 1977 is a classic age of art for Aparo!
