That's wonderfully evocative! I wonder if Jim had a backstory in mind for this? It inspired me to write a little micro-story.

Jim's vision is that of a woman astronaut explorer encountering yet another dead world (an ancient civilization long gone). She wonders if there is ANY life out there...

Jim's long been a personal fav SF cover artist, so it's not surprise he conveyed his intent so well! Here's what I did (delete it if it's inappropriate): "Scout Log: a Signal finally cried out from the void's silence. Its distance made a lie of moments with the 1st test of our new Jump Drill fold-space drive. But the centuries it took to reach us were longer than that damn Drake Equation variable of 'L'! Their grand sky-city decaying, an archive survived to tell a dark irony: a pervasive fungus felled these willowy plant sentients. I'm alone in a crowd of transformed remains. Now ... am I also infected?"

Aha! I think Jim would approve of your response -- nicely done!
And yes you picked up on the glowing mutated (fungi?) that is claiming this world and even replicating it (the polyp bulbs match the old metal structure). Like an echo...
