I've always wanted to add a Dan Jurgens page to my collection. Obviously, one would always prefer it to be something from his work on Superman, but this teen Titans page listed on eBay a while back was just too cheap to pass up. From the last issue of late 1990s incarnation of the Titans, it features the four new young heroes that served as most of the short-lived lineup. Jurgens wrote and drew this Teen Titans series, and by introducing four new young heroes -- Risk, Argent, Prysm and Joto -- he seemed clearly inspired by Marv Wolfman and George Perez's creation of new teen heroes when they relaunched the team to great success and praise in the early 1980s. Jurgens failed to find the same heart and energy that Wolfman and Perez did, though.

That said, I love the crispness of the art on this board, despite the D-list quality of the characters. Jurgens and inker Norm Rapmund's polished linework conveys the youth of the heroes nicely (especially Prysm's innocence), and the simplicity of the Prysm design is striking and eye-catching. This isn't exactly a prime Jurgens page, but I like the tiered layout and the strong, bold lines throughout. I also like how the art goes beyond the usual borders of the page. While this is Page 12 of the story, a mark in red ink at the upper right points out this is Page 16 when one factors in the ads in the final product. Also noteworthy is the fact it's signed by Jurgens, and as I've mentioned before, I always prefer a board with the lettering right on it rather than existing only in a computer file somewhere.

This is a fun page which has some of Jurgens "trademark expressions", like the surprised Risk on the first panel. I actually really liked Jurgens work on the title and found it among his best works (on both art and writing).

It's funny you should mention the depiction of Risk's face in the first panel, Gal. Looking at it again, it made me think of what I believe was probably Jurgens' strongest collaboration: that with inker Art Thibert on Adventures of Superman, long before the "Death of Superman" storyline. Rapmund does an excellent job over Jurgens' pencils on this page. I've found his more recent work with Jurgens to be rougher, edgier in tone (which is fine and sometimes is called for, depending on the nature of the story being told).
