Description

Berserk is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Kentaro Miura who, sadly, passed away in 2021 and we all thought the manga would remain unfinished. It turns out Miura was following a plot he laid out at the very beginning and his best friend was the only other person to know it, so it seems we'll have a conclusion.

The story is about a man, Guts, a swordsman (wielding a HUGE sword) living in a medieval/fantasy world, attempting to defy fate by first going after the forces that wrong him until he decides to protect the one thing he didn't lose but could have if he didn't turn away.

There's (much) more to it in the many volumes published with the incredibly detailed art by Miura, but my advice is to check it out by yourself if you don't know the manga. You'll be blown away.

I had a Berserk commission in mind for quite some time and I was thinking about who could have been the perfect artist to do it... when I got confirmation that Matteo Scalera, an Italian artist who's been mostly working in the US on superheroes, would have been at LCCAF 2022 in Cernobbio, I immediately asked him if he would have been interested in this subject. Luckily, he was.

I believe he did a marvelous job here. He knocked the ball out of the park.

A great piece with Scalera's wash bringing many levels of depth to the piece with the white gleam of the Dragon Slayer cutting across the composition. I like that there are slight notches on the blade to show wear.

I'm a huge Berserk fan- great composition, use of negative space and black, and the artist's energetic style perfectly captures the frenetic energy of Gattsu. Bravo!
