DescriptionStefano Tamburini (1955-1986) was one of the most outstanding comic-artists of the so called “Italian Alternative Comics Wave”. He was part of a large group grown as a consequence of the “1977 Movement” which, in Italy, was a kind of a second 1968 young revolution.Tamburini together with Vincenzo Sparagna and Filippo Scozzari in 1980 founded a magazine titled “Frigidaire” which became the showcase of these young alternative artists, and where six stories of the comic “Snake Agent” were published between December 1980 and June 1984. With this kind of comic Tamburini overcame the boundaries of the same comics concept. In fact “Snake Agent” must be considered as a “bridge” between Contemporary Art and Comics: quite an experimental work where the job of the comic-artist is mainly conceptual rather than physical. Tamburini instead of the pencil used a Rank Xerox photo-copier and a book with the daily strips of “Secret Agent X-9” drawn by Mal Graff in the early 40s. He, Tamburini, added a dynamic effect moving the book while the Xerox was shooting. Moreover he deleted the original dialogues and fulfilled the blank spaces with new, alternative, ones, like in the “dirty comics” of the early 30s. The result was such an “art-work” that, were it made by Andy Warhol, it would be now exhibited at Moma in NYC. Unfortunately, at the time and even now, Tamburini was much less famous than Andy Warhol, so only today you can have the pleasure to see it exhibited here on CAF. Fascinating from many perspectives. Reworking and reusing other's art to create a new series is a fun idea. Companies like Fiction House and other artists often reused panels but this is something quite different. I had not realized there was a copier called Rank Xerox which explains Liberatore's creations name in a way I was previously not familiar with.

By the way, I thinl that "Snake Agent" was too ahead in time...
