DescriptionIn recent years, I've held myself to a rule of not making impulse purchases - and, amazingly, since 2010 I have successfully NOT done so.Well, that streak ends this evening. I was doing some market & pricing diligence for a friend when I came across this one in the most recent Heritage auction...and it really just floored me. The uniqueness of Colan's figure work and layouts, the gorgeous Everett inking, the overall composition of the page...I just really enjoyed it as a piece of comic art. And felt like I had to have it. So, I dropped my rule...and bought it...and now I do have it. Which I'm really happy about. Hope you enjoy it as much as I do. Social/Sharing |

If you're going to make an impulse purchase, this is the way to do it! This page is a complete stunner, especially the inking on the gorilla in the first big panel. Big congrats!

Yet again you've made another terrible decision involving your collection. How do you sleep at night?

I think the page has many classic touches by both of these hall of fame artists which elevate it above what I would normally consider "an impulse buy." Perhaps it is more a lucky happenstance of the right page being available at the right time.

Beautiful. Everett did the impossible: retaining the subtlety and nuance of Colan's pencil shading. This is probably as close as an inked Colan page will get to looking like the original pencils. Congrats.

An addition like this is evidence of a mature collector and reminds me I'm regressing. Thanks for the wake-up call.

This one caught my eye as well! Congrats--such a beautiful, unique combo of artists. Someday I hope I'm lucky enough to snag my own Colan/Everett!

I was so enthralled with the inking on this piece that it was a good 10 minutes into staring at it before I realized I had been staring directly at the Monster Ape's crotch for about half that time. Well Played, Sir.

Colan's brushwork was really something in this issue. Love how he dilutes the ink in places and uses dry brush in others. Great action, too.

Not sure how I missed commenting on this one. Colan Everett is my dream team of artists. I totally crashed and forgot and missed these auctions. I am glad to see if it couldn't be in my collection, it is in very worthy company. Everett was a great artist but he was even more accomplished as an inker. Many inkers had trouble with Colan pencils but some of the guys like Shores, Palmer and Everett really got what Colan was doing and could bring the art to another level.

That third panel is quite unusual, looks almost abstract on a first glance. Fun page!

Colan/Everett is the Lennon/McCartney artist pairing of my collecting life, and this is a gorgeous example of their collaboration... very nice, indeed!

Yeah, good call on this one. There's something almost uncanny about Everett's interpretation of Colan. I don't agree that he's the most faithful to Colan's pencils--notoriously hard to ink--but he's faithful in spots other inkers would alter, and he emphasizes things other inkers wouldn't think to, and the result is a magic that can never be duplicated.

This is most certainly the comment of an artist! That magic you reference is so palpably 'there' when you are looking at this piece in person...but I don't have an artistic bone in my body, so I can't explain why. Hopefully, we get to connect in person one of these days and you can show me what you mean!
