DescriptionThe second, and mercifully final, piece of art from the most expensive dinner ever with my good friend, Steve Morger. There’s a lot going on across this stunning Jim Aparo cover from November of 1974 – and that’s because there was a lot going on in this issue! The main story – “Gotterdammerung!” – clearly features Batman and Manhunter. But, it’s a 100-page issue, so there are additional stories featuring The Spectre, Green Lantern, The Creeper and a pairing between Batman & Robin. This one truly has it all! “Gotterdammerung” (which I think is German for “God’s twilight”) begins with a dead body floating on Gotham’s waterfront that’s recovered by the GCPD and Commission Gordon…that turns out to be one of Batman’s best friends, Dan Kingdom (an ex-Green Beret, ninth-degree black belt private detective – what a bad-ass). Kingdom had been ‘on to something’ with regards to the Prime Minister of the newly created nation, Congola. He must have been on to the fact that he was about to be assassinated at Wayne Manor…which happens about two pages later. Anyway, Batman puts on his detective hat and we come to understand why the story is entitled ‘Gotterdammerung” – there’s a final battle with evil powers that results in a whole bunch of destruction. Good stuff. Thanks again, Steve – thrilled to be the next steward of this absolute beauty! But, next dinner is on you :) Social/Sharing |

I think I drank too much at dinner. The only thing I recalled afterward was this cover...which is why it ended up being dessert!

I remember reading these stories when they came out! Everything came to a head in this issue -- an all-time favorite! Congratulations on this fantastic acquisition!

Wow! Thanks for this yellowing, glue-stained, beauty of a scan. This is what vintage original art is all about. A true Bronze Age gem. And I love that you have the consecutive issue cover. Again, wow!

As I age, I think of I myself as yellowing & glue-stained...and increasingly unable to hide such facts. So, I'm taking the same approach with my comic art!

Great cover. I was lucky enough to be at that great dinner and I remember Steve pulling these out. I knew where we would eventually see them show up and glad to see you did get them! I do wonder if a certain Club Lago dinner a few years ago turned out to be more expensive than this one in the long run:) Always a pleasure to spend time with you and to see what new treasures you dig up.

Jeff...you bring up a very good point. I'm going to have to do a little accounting on this topic and see which dinner is actually the more expensive. Now, let's keep in mind....the meter is still running on our Club Lago dinner! Pretty sure you're point is going to end up being spot on. Thankfully that was a great dinner on many fronts - a great new art discovery that night via an even greater friend. I'll take the 'bill' for that every time!

Wonderful Aparo cover! Don't think I've seen another cover with both Batman and Manhunter! Love all the paste-ups, touch-ups and everything else that contributes to the cover's history! Great one!
