DescriptionWhere to begin?First, this is the final double-page spread (of a total of seven) from John Byrne’s run of thirty-five Uncanny X-Men issues (issues #108, #109 and #111-143 – covering the time period of December 1977 to March 1981) in collaboration with Chris Claremont and Terry Austin – for me a magical series of stories featuring my favorite superhero group from a uniquely talented creative team. Of all of the storylines they crafted together, my favorite was ‘Days of Future Past’. This double-page spread features the entire X-Men team on Halloween of 1980 at the critical, present day mid-point of the ‘Days of Future Past’ story in issue #142 – with one major caveat for the casual observer. Kitty Pryde (Byrne’s signature character creation during his run – first appearance in issue #129 and officially added to the team as Sprite in issue #139) is not the teenaged ‘Kitten’ the X-Men know and love – she is actually the psychically exchanged Kate Pryde-Rasputin from the year 2013! Sent back in time by the future telepath Rachel Summers, the daughter of the story’s dystopian future counterparts of Cyclops (Scott Summers) and Phoenix (Jean Grey-Summers), Kate is here to help the X-Men change the future and save the world. Although inhabiting the body of the X-Men’s newest member, she’s “an older, sadder, wiser, stronger self” from a future where Sentinels rule North America, her children with Peter Rasputin (Colossus) have been killed after being hunted down as mutants and the world stands on the brink of nuclear annihilation. This scene takes place just after the newly formed Brotherhood of Evil Mutants crashes the mutant hearings being conducted in Washington, D.C. by Senator (and Presidential candidate) Robert Kelly with the intention of killing Kelly, as well as Charles Xavier & Moira McTaggert who are also attending. It’s the assassination of Kelly that launches the future that Kate Pryde has been sent to prevent. While she fights in the present to save Kelly, her mutant teammates fight Sentinels in 2013 - 33 years in the future - to give her the time to complete her mission. Of the double-page spreads from Byrne’s run, this is clearly among the top four – the rankings of which would depend on your view of certain story arcs and their place & importance within the X-Men mythos. For me, it ranks second overall, only trailing the page 2-3 DPS from ‘The Fate of the Phoenix’ story in issue #137. That DPS features the whole team (Cyclops, Phoenix, Storm, Wolverine, Nightcrawler, Professor X, Colossus, Angel & Beast) in a full two-pages on the cargo deck of Lilandra’s flagship Shi’Ar Imperial dreadnought in a story that dramatically concludes the Dark Phoenix Saga. Hard to argue against that one being ranked #1. From there, I think the third-ranked is the page 2-3 DPS from the ‘Something Wicked This Way Comes’ story in issue #139. That DPS features a full two-pages of Storm, Wolverine, Angel, Storm, Nightcrawler and Colossus - as overseen by Professor X - working out in the Danger Room. In all candor, this ranking is extremely personal given how much I truly loved this issue and read it over and over again (something about a young teenager from a Chicago suburb being made a member of a superhero team really hit home with me – go figure). My fourth-ranked is the page 2-3 DPS from the ‘Visions of Death ‘ story in issue #115 featuring an enraged Wolverine attacking Sauron (hovering over a prone Storm) while Banshee, Cyclops and Nightcrawler look on. Hard to beat this one for artistic quality and imagery – take emotion and/or ownership out of the equation and it probably is the second- or third-ranked DPS. Either way, the other three double-page spreads materially lag the top four and include pages 2-3 from the ‘Mindgames’ story in issue #111 (featuring Banshee as a carnival barker and the X-Men depicted as members of his troop), the pages 2-3 DPS from the ‘To Save the Savage Land’ story in issue #116 (featuring the backs of the X-Men while being shown the City of the Sun God by Ka-zar) and the pages 2-3 DPS from ‘The Submergence of Japan!’ story in issue #118 (again featuring the backs of the X-Men – with the exception of Storm – while overlooking a Japanese port city). All in all, simply delighted to have this piece of comic art history in my gallery. Hope you enjoy it, as well. Social/Sharing |

Smart pick-up Chris! As Gene mentioned, with the Byrne X-market heating up exponentially, I'm sure there were more than a few sage collectors out there starting to eye this potential purchase.

A great page from a great story-arc. There will be more attention on this page once the new X-Men movie - based on Days of Future Past - comes out. Congratulations!

One of those pages that people thought was crazy-priced a couple years ago, but which now looks like a pretty good deal. Amazing sequence.

Another key piece for you amazing collection. I almost feel sheepish posting a comment as it seems redundant, the piece speaks for itself.

Can't believe I haven't commented before. You know what I think already but it's just a stunning image from one of the formative stories of my youth. An all time classic and a (un)canny buy! Does it get any better?!

I think that is an OK Byrne example, Chris. When are you going to post your really good stuff? Yeah, right - living near Colorado has caused me to lose some brain cells over the years. JK because I marvel at your entire collection, and this piece in particular.

Wonderful double-splash from a classic scene! The top panel with the two teams facing off is of the maine course; but for me the dessert is Senator Kelly's out stretched arm breaking the border in panel two... so nice! Congrats, and thanks for sharing!
