DescriptionEntertaining Comics.Johnny Craig. The Vault of Horror. The Vault-Keeper. And, to top it all off, the first appearance of Drusilla, the Vault-Keeper’s uber-creepy and completely silent co-host for the final four issues of the series. Needless to say, I’m pretty happy. The Vault of Horror was published by EC Comics from April/May 1950 until December/January 1955. The series was hosted by The Vault-Keeper (one of three hosts for EC's horror comics line collectively known as the GhouLunatics – which included the Crypt-Keeper and the Old Witch) who acted as narrator while also adding some levity to the dark stories via puns and humor. Although the Vault-Keeper was originally designed by Al Feldstein, Johnny Craig is the artist most associated with the character, having drawn almost all of his lead stories in The Vault of Horror. And Drusilla – what do you say about her? Always there by the side of the Vault-Keeper in the introduction to an issue, it’s unclear why as she says…nothing. She was always silent, always staring. Is she a witch? Is she a vampire? Is she just an ordinary human who happens to be mute and likes hanging out with ghouls? No one knows. EC Comics went under after Vault of Horror #40, so there’s no telling what was in store for her character. Clearly, when designing her, Craig must have drawn inspiration from Vampira, the pale, raven-haired and very popular hostess of The Vampira Show that ran from April 1954 to April 1955. She and the show were at the height of their popularity around the time of Drusilla’s creation. Social/Sharing |

Oh, WOW! On my short, bittersweet list of impossible grails is a Johnny Craig Vault Keeper splash, but that's never going to happen. This one is the best! Congratulations! :-D

It is unclear why she says nothing during the stories? Hmm. Perhaps they were... silence fiction stories. Ahem. Sorry. (Great splash.)

Craig EC Horror at its best. Really neat that this splash sports a single illustration that, whilst fronting an 8-page story, has a standalone quality to it.
