DescriptionI mentioned one of my collecting goals for 2011 was a Bill Everett Sub-Mariner piece - but when the opportunity came to add this stunner to the mix, I just could not resist. It is a twice-up beauty that was recently published in Blake Bell's 'Fire & Water' book on Everett.Strange Tales ran 168 issues, cover-dated June 1951 to May 1968. It began as a horror anthology from Marvel's 1950’s precursor, Atlas Comics. Initially modeled after the gory morality tales of the popular and groundbreaking EC line of comics, Strange Tales became less graphic with the 1954 imposition of the Comics Code, which prohibited graphic horror, as well as vampires, zombies and other classical monsters. The series changed again with the return of Jack Kirby. Starting with issue #68 (April 1959), Strange Tales was revamped to reflect the then-current trend of science fiction drive-in movie monsters. Virtually every issue would open with a Kirby monster story (generally inked by Christopher Rule initially, then later Dick Ayers), followed by one or two twist-ending thrillers or sci-fi tales drawn by Don Heck, Paul Reinman or Joe Sinnott, with the whole thing capped by an often-surreal Stan Lee & Steve Ditko short. The anthology switched to superheroes during the Silver Age of comic books, retaining the sci-fi, suspense and monsters as backup features. The title became a "split book" with the introduction of sorcerer Doctor Strange, by Lee and artist Steve Ditko, in issue #110 (July 1963). Doctor Strange was again featured in issue #111 (August 1963), then skipped two issues before returning permanently with issue #114 (November 1963). The character’s eight-page origin story would be told in issue #115 (December 1963). Eventually, as co-plotter and later sole plotter, Ditko would take Strange into ever-more-abstract realms. Adversaries for the new hero included Baron Mordo introduced in issue #111 (August 1963) and Dormammu in issue #126 (November 1964). Clea, who would become a longtime love interest for Doctor Strange, was also introduced in issue #126. The series included with what fans and historians consider one of modern comics' milestones: the introduction, in issue #138 (October 1965), of Ditko's enduring conception of Eternity, the personification of the universe and soon-to-be cornerstone of the Marvel mythos. Issue #146 (July 1966) marked Ditko's final bow on the series. Bill Everett succeeded him through #152 (January 1967), followed by Marie Severin (self-inked for four issues before being inked by future Hulk signature artist Herb Trimpe in some of his earliest Marvel work), and Dan Adkins taking over from #161 (October 1967) to the final issue, #168 (May 1968). Again, sincere thanks to Roger Clark - a pleasure dealing with...I certainly plan on much more of it in the future! Social/Sharing |

Ok. You seriously have to invite us all over and soon. This is fantastic. And the Forbush Family Ghost is an extra bonus.

It's been four days, and now that the stinging tears of regret (that I didn't know Roger had this) have dried, I can once more appreciate how staggeringly awesome this splash is. Huge congratulations on a major score! Uh oh... welling up again... *sniff* *SOB*
Thanks for sharing this amazing art on CAF!

You know, I haven't checked out your gallery in awhile, but I must say, I really love what you've done with the place. Silver Age flourishes here and there. Two redonkulous Kirby pieces. My what a busy boy you've been. These acquisitions are nothing short of magical! Congratulations!

As wonderful as this page is, and it is indeed magical, those margin notes are priceless. Stan, I would assume? Just a wonderful piece of art!

Wow! Stunning Bill Everett splash! I've always admired Everett's inks, but this is one of the few examples of his pencils I've seen. The composition here is great. I love Everett's depiction of the mystical bonds holding Dr, Strange prisoner and the telepathic image of the ancient one. And, not surprisingly the inks are spot on. Great splash!
