Description

An acrobatic Daredevil busts through the window. Ghost Rider roughs up a thug. All in one of the final issues of the first volume of Daredevil before changing over to Quesada's Marvel Knights line. This page survived Ariel Olivetti’s studio fire that occurred over 10+ years ago. The heat mark in the margins is a hellish embellish that adds to the street cred. I later had Phantom Restoration treat it with a spray that stunts the acid from causing further damage.

There are small stat paste-ups on the thug. The thugs hair is mostly a stat but original ink appears on it. The thug's shoulder is a stat with what appears to be original art (looks like they corrected the shirt's wrinkles). There is a thin stat strip that runs down the inseam of the thug's left leg.

I was a fan of the Daredevil book during the period right before Marvel Knights.  Love this example from that era.

It is for this very reason they grease the poles during sport's playoffs.

The layout of the top acrobratic sequence is amazing!  The panels are stacked like cards and tilted to allow for an easier flow of action.  The radar inset is there to alert us to the big presence of Ghost Rider.  Small storytelling tricks like that allow the bigger images to leave a deeper impression!

Thanks, Marcus! I hadn't thought about how the "stacked card" layout worked. Is there a coined phrased for when Daredevil's sonar rings appear in comics?

It's officially coined as "radar sense" for DD like Spidey sense.  They used to be just done by concentric circles, but many editors have allowed the artists freedom to show it how they like.

I know Olivetti's known mostly for this painted pin up-y stuff, and rightly so, but he's now slouch on the B&W storytelling front!  Just check this example layout.  Great layout, enhancing the storytelling, then a suh-weet flash of Mr. flame skull himself!  Congrats, John!

Fantastic visual storytelling by Ariel Olivetti and Pier Brito! Love the opening panels with their crazy askew layout as Daredevil vaults into the room because it really sets up the key scene of...Ghost Rider! What a cool drawing of GR taking down his quarry. The thick, heavy blacks on his leathers really make the image stand out! Glad this one was saved from the fire--It's a treasure!

What a great pairing. I love the off-kilter panels. The action conveyed through phantom DD as he crashes through the window is great. I love the imposing Ghost Rider standing outside the panels as if he's not bound by the confines/rules of the story.
