DescriptionOriginal hand-drawn (penciled and inked) art for a classic 1930's Golden Age Smilin' Jack by Zack Mosley, for the November 24, 1938 (11/24/38) daily strip. This is from the classic "Death Rock" storyline, which is one of the most classic and best remembered stories in the history of this legendary newspaper strip. This episode is titled "No Doubt Jack Is Right", which is written in blue pencil at the top. The full page is large, measuring approximately 21 3/4" by 7 1/4" (which I believe is about standard size for most newspaper strip orig art). This is a great piece of original artwork from the long-running series that lasted approximately 40 years from 1933 (when it began originally as "On The Wing") through 1973. As one of the foremost aviation-based American adventure comic strips, nice examples of Smilin Jack are always desirable and sought after. A life-long flying enthusiast, Mosley always put his knowledge of aeronautics into the strip, and kept things accurate and current. The piece has been signed by Zack Mosley in the second panel. The artwork is in good overall shape, with paper aging to be expected, along with some staining in the margins and on the back side, and you can see there is an uneven cut along the top of the art board, with small bits of missing paper along the top edge of the paper. The piece still has the original 1938 Chicago Tribune - N.Y. News Syndicate Inc. copyright piece attached in the second panel. This is an outstanding and rare piece of classic GA art. It would look fantastic framed and prominently displayed, and would be a key piece in any collection.Social/Sharing |
