DescriptionRobert Crumb East Village Other #3 Complete 1-Page Story Mr. Natural Original Art dated 12-25-67 (East Village Other, 1967). Titled "The Man From Affiganistan", this 20 panel strip originally ran in the EVO before being printed in comic book form in R. Crumb's Head Comix from Viking Press in 1968. The strip features Mr. Natural and Flakey Foont. Bristol board with a combined image area of 10.5" x 16.5". Most of the panels are trimmed to the borders (a couple of sections have more than one panel on them), and have then been affixed to a larger sheet of Bristol board. There is glue residue around them, and the backing board has been folded. The Intro/Title Panel is missing and has been replaced with a printed stat paste-up, as has Panel 13. Back story: this original format was drawn for EVO. And the fact that it's an original EVO page is extremely significant in itself; Crumb then made the deal with Viking/Cole to do Head Comix. The fact that this work is the first "mainstream” publication again is very significant- since it gave Crumb infinitely more exposure than the tabloids and underground comix. This art was cut up to format for Head Comix- I think, but not 100% sure, that Robert himself did the re formatting. So this is large, vintage EVO/ Head Comix page from 1967!!Social/Sharing |

Historic and amazing! It's too bad that Crumb's work is making the transition to fine art when it comes to prices, but it's always been there when it comes to craft and cultural significance.

Exciting! You said "a vintage page from 1967", which seems so far in time ... but actually the "spirit" of this page seems to come directly from the platinum age of comics, with that "crude", almost prehistoric, trait of the first Crumb. Awesome piece.
