DescriptionThe Korvac Saga. Spread from Avengers #167 through to its powerful conclusion in #177, it's one of the best known Avengers storylines. Guest starring the original Guardians of the Galaxy it featured Michael Korvac a cyborg villain originally from the future who had gotten access to Galactus' ship and absorbed knowledge/power to become godlike. Marked by solid writing, including the right amounts of action and drama and a few twists, as well as great art by George Perez, Sal Buscema and David Wenzel, it's quite a memorable run.Especially when punctuated by a powerful finale in issue 177 that was surprisingly dark and mature. Once the battle gets started, it's non-stop action with Avengers and Guardians literally getting killed every page by Michael--and the "quiet" moments with Captain America and Wonderman fighting Michael are equally powerful - ending with the heroes getting resurrected by Michael as he dies of hopelessness--only to have the battle begin anew with Michael's enraged companion Carina (daughter of the Collector), until she basically forces Thor to kill her. And then there's Moondragon's sad epilogue. It's heady stuff for a kid's comic in 1978. Over the years, I've been offered a number of pages from 177 but they were not the one or two (or three) I really wanted, so I passed. But then this came up on Ebay and I was determined to get it, especially if I had to have one page -- this was my favorite. Why this page? Some great Iron Man of course. And besides every panel showing great action and dialogue, it spotlights the big guns but shows how even they are not powerful enough to stop Michael. Social/Sharing |

I love this story arc and David Wenzel doesnt get enought credit for the work he did during these issues. A superb fight page and a one and done example if ever I saw one.
That being said it's a panel page, so 🤷...

A high point in late 70's Avengers' storylines as it was a major event before event miniseries and major company wide crossovers were invented.

Great pick-up old friend!
Ever notice the stats from this issue are alwasy brown-ish. It's weird in that the pages are still mostly white. I do wonder what type of stat paper was used for 177?
Although before my time this along with 181 are my personal favorite Avengers 1970's books. Glad I was able to secure a page from it back when they cost less than a benjamin :)
