DescriptionA memorable cover from the 1980s and the best of the Luke McDonnell Iron Man covers in my view (closely followed by #169 (which also has historic significance) and #192). In fact, this one is on my short list of top Iron Man covers of all time.The image was very popular and used by Marvel on a number of things including a poster, graphic novel collections and multiple T-shirts over the years. Ironically I had left off reading the book by 1983 when this hit the stands. But when I came back a few years later (as Tony Stark was sobering up) and caught up on back issues, this cover certainly stood out. I really loved the image of multiple Iron Man armors. It took 6 years to acquire this cover amidst some stiff competition (thank you Robert for agreeing to part with it). Social/Sharing |

I've always liked this cover, and felt like Luke McDonnell's run was under-rated. Of course, it probably helps that these issues came out right when I started collecting comics--definitely a nostalgia factor there. But either way, how could you not love a multiple Iron Man cover?? Congrats!

If I might be permitted to revert to parlance I perhaps might have utilized during the release of this particular issue: "Dude, that's totally awesome, tubular and radical!"
One of my fondestly remembered runs from all of Iron Man's history and one of the best covers from that run!

I have never been a big McDonnell fan, finding his art to be serviceable (which is good in terms of storytelling), not exciting (which is often better for an art fan). But this cover is incredibly memorable and powerful.

Again, one of my favorite things about this site is rediscovering artists from the past that I really liked, yet forgot about. Luke McDonnell is one of those artists, and this is a prefect example of his classic work. Mitchell's inks work perfectly with his style.
