DescriptionJust a great, cool 70s Iron Man cover. One of my favorite 70s/80s covers of Iron Man. I also agree with the comments. Having such a large dramatic/powerful image of Iron Man really makes this a stand-out, both from an artistic perspective as well as a story telling perspective. Al Milgrom did a great job on this cover, with nice inks by Jack Abel.People collect covers for a lot of reasons. Certainly nostalgia plays a part for some, including me. This has always been a cover I have liked, partly because of the large Kirbyesque image of Iron Man and partly because of the story which appealed to a kid who was anxious to see how a damaged and beaten Iron Man was going to win out over the seemingly unstoppable Ultimo. To me, it's also likely the best cover Al Milgrom has ever done. No need to go into detail but it took a lot of time, effort and expense to obtain this cover. And I'm appreciative to the person who finally agreed to part with it (thank you). I am reminded of an odd but accurate phrase used by the first attorney I ever worked with - a senior partner who could be grandfatherly, curmudgeonly and wise all in the same day. Whenever we completed an especially difficult transaction, he'd say "that was like giving birth to a rhinoceros." This was like having twin rhinos :) Social/Sharing |

Vintage Marvel Magic!!! A great cover indeed, and I'm happy to know it's in the home of someone who truly connects to it. Congratulations, my friend!!!

The second cover in a row that I never thought I'd see leave their previous owners. Nicely done.

If you were to ask me what my favorite Milgrom cover was, my first thought would be Firestorm #1 followed maybe by that Milgrom/Wrightson Captain Marvel cover with Drax the Destroyer, but, yeah, presented with this cover, I think it definitely deserves to be in that company. And of those three, this one is certainly the most dramatic. Well done, sir.

Wasn't really reading comics at this time, so I don't know the storyline, but I do remember this cover. Does everything a cover should. Shows the hero in a great pose. Makes you want to buy the book. Agreed that it is one of the top Milgrom covers. Congrats!

Stunning! I loved the Iron Man series growing up and this is among my very favorite covers. I remember these covers well as I both loved and hated them. The covers from this era were very dramatic and I loved the artistry on display but the compromised armor always drove me a little nuts. I mean c'mon, shellhead's armor was better than that, right? It was constantly being melted, sliced, smashed and generally trashed. This cover was especially awesome because even after his armor looked ready from the scrap heap, Tony was clearly read to bring it to his opponent. I got to talking to a local artist (Uko Smith) a few years and we ended up on the subject of Iron Man and favorite covers. This cover was his favorite as well and I knew I had to ask him to recreate it for me. The link below is Uko's take on this favorite cover. Congrats on an era defining cover! http://www.comicartfans.com/GalleryPiece.asp?Piece=777504&GSub=116290

This is incredible. A favorite cover of mine growing up. I never realized, until now, that it was Al Milgrom's greatness behind this little gem. Thanks for sharing.

Count me among the folks who think this could be Al Milgrom's best cover. Whatever you had to do to acquire this a few years back, it was worth it. I hope you can acquire more interior pages from the book as well. Thanks for sharing, and Happy New Year!

When I was young, I didn't read a lot of Iron Man. As a kid, I must have missed this cover on the stands. Because this cover alone would have made me a fan of Iron Man. So cool looking!
