DescriptionThis was the cover to the pulp, Weird Tales, August 1934, for Robert E. Howard's Conan story, "The Devil in Iron." A Brundage Weird Tales cover has been on my grail list for a long time, and I was extremely happy to acquire this one!Social/Sharing |

I'm not sure which is more amazing, that a housewife from Chicago was responsible for the first painted image of Conan or that you actually have one of her originals. The painting itself is rather jarring to the image in my head of Conan which was formed by the works of Smith, Buscema and, later, Frazetta, but wholly fascinating nonetheless.

So somehow I missed this for seven years. This is a truly remarkable piece of history. Just beginning with how wonderfully archaic it is, reminding me who Conan was probably seen as in his time vs. now. I'm very glad you got this and thanks for putting it up.

Knowing what this is and then reading others comments, I believe Patrick said it best. To an REH fan, that's a museum piece.

Looks like Eaton Press is using it as the basis for the cover of a new leather bound Conan collection.

An amazing cornerstone for any collection! I would say the cover for the Red Nails Weird Tales with Valeria on it...would be a grail for me!

Be gentle with it. A Margaret Brundage pastel work from Weird Tales would be on anyones Grail list.
