DescriptionThis was available in Heritage earlier this year, and I think most stayed away because of the fading. And it is something that makes you think twice, but you still have beautiful art, with incredible inks by Mike Mignola! From Heritage! Deadlines make for strange bedfellows -- and in this case, a splash-jam featuring three comic industry greats! As the epic limited series Secret Wars was coming to an end, a closing deadline caused Marvel to call in available artists to help finish inking the issue -- which happened to be relative new-comers Mike Mignola and Arthur Adams, who were visiting the Marvel offices at the time looking for work. The artistic upstarts, who would gain "legendary" status later in their careers, inked over fan-favorite Mike Zeck, with the art defining itself years later by their chosen ink -- as Mignola's inkwork has remained bold, Adams pen lines have faded. The dynamic page shows the heroes battling creatures created by Klaw as they make their way to Dr. Doom, empowered by the stolen energy of the Beyonder. Members of the Avengers, Fantastic Four, and X-Men, as well as a newly black-costumed Spider-Man are rendered in ink over graphite on Bristol board with an image area of 10" x 15". Toning, a production trimmed top edge and corners, a pinhole in the top margin, tape abrasions on the top and bottom edges, ink fading, blue pencil editorial marks, with creasing, and handling wear. Signed by Mignola in the upper left of the image area, and by Adams and Editor-In-Chief Jim Shooter in the bottom margin, and again by Adams on the back. Social/Sharing |

I remember when I brought this issue home on the day it came out, how excited I was to see that Art Adams had obviously pitched in to help with deadlines. Great memories!

So dynamic and beautiful. I gotta say, though I would be seriously tempted to have Mignola and/or Adams reink the fading areas while both they AND the art still exist. In 30 years it'll all be gone. Thoughts?

I have thought of it. Not sure he would want to. And most think it would be a mistake. Just keeping it out of the light. Ned to figure out.

It would be a challenge for an artist of Adams' skillset to revert back to his youth and relegate himself to an exact tracer over old lines, but that's the only way to do it right IMO. Then he could add "Reinked for fading in 2023 - Art Adams" to the back of the board, etc etc
It preserves the original team, original look, and ceases the fading. I fear, otherwise, it will be nearly invisible someday. I get the uncertainty in retouching published art, but I feel the ship is setting sail if not sailed already. No easy answer for an absolutely classic piece of art.

I think you should get a pre-school relative to re ink it. Just a joke. I think Art Adams could do it readily enough as the fading means he still has enough to work from. Theres so much art form this period where the artists worked with crap quality non lightfast materials. This deserves restoration as its fabulous. Whatever else you do, do not allow a cack handed inker anywhere near it. Obviously in the collection of someone who hung it in intense light for a period. Tell Art to use better materials this time. Lol.

While there are some who would disagree, I think this suggestion by Sean sounds great - same artist to preserve the piece to me is the way to go

The double sized finale of the classic! It only became apparent that these weren't Beatty's inks with hindsight as I was blown away by the spectacle of the story's conclusion and the aftermath.

So do you have a plan to keep this from totally going blank? Or is this the way it will remain and the fading has stopped? Just nervous for you.

Keeping it out of the light. I want to get it re-inked, but afraid to. Not sure Arthur even would be willing to.

So cool!
My favorite part is the scale of Thor's hammer throw vs. the giant slug monster. Tiny little hammer, about to do some damage!

Y'know, the fading gives the page kind of a 'screen' effect, like the characters in the back are being transported somewhere else

Too good! Definitely jealous of this one. Great battle splash from one of my favorite comic stories ever! And you got Zeck...and Mignola...and Adams?! That's what I'm talking about! Congrats!
