Description"Your favorite Astro City character" was the prompt for this mystery sketch. John told me that he had never read Astro City and had to do some research into who the cool characters were, and he picked very well indeed! The Confessor is definitely one of my faves and was at the center of one of the best storylines from the book. This piece perfectly captures The Confessor's tendency of hiding in the shadows of his cathedral HQ. I really love the design of the stained glass and how it adds contrast to an otherwise dark piece. The hatching in the shadows and the controlled use of zip on the cloak and eyes also help break things up with some subtle textures. Purchased as part of the Mystery Sketch event during Comic Art Live November 2024. Social/Sharing |

Brilliant. John went above and beyond.
Who would win in a tortured soul battle, The Confessor or Spawn?

The Confessor storyline itself was a nod to 70's Marvel as it shifted into darker mystery type stories from the silver age. John Amor picks up on this to have a serious tone to all the atmospheric effects used in his illustration.

Great contrast and a lot of different techniques combine to create a really impressive piece. Fantastic mystery sketch!

Ive loved Astro City for years, but the Confesser arc was something i only read within the last few. It lived up to its reputation, and this hero made an indelible impact on my perspective of comicsdom. Amor picked very very well.
