I've mentioned before that Common Elements ideas often come to me in the most bizarre manner. Here's an example.

Several years ago, I was channel-surfing late one night (as I am wont to do) when I stumbled upon a PBS documentary about the composer and songwriter Stephen Foster. Mostly, when I thought about Stephen Foster -- to the extent that I thought about him at all -- it was mostly in the context of the racially insensitive lyrics in many of his most familiar songs. But as I watched this documentary -- or more specifically, listened to the soundtrack -- it occurred to me that Foster wrote a lot of romantic numbers about women: i.e., "Beautiful Dreamer," "Jeanie (With the Light Brown Hair)," and "Oh, Susanna."

My Common Elements connector immediately switched on. Beautiful Dreamer is, of course, one of Jack Kirby's Forever People, and the best-known "Jeanie" in comics is founding X-Man Jean Grey. (Okay, Jean's hair is usually depicted as red, not light brown, but what's a bottle of Miss Clairol between friends?) Ultragirl -- real name, Suzanna Sherman -- rounded out the trio.
