Description

Closing the year out with great art from books I loved as a kid, and today’s installment – Ron Lim’s Silver Surfer! There are a few names that come to mind when I think “SS” but Lim’s at the top based on his Surfer being THE Surfer when I was getting into comics. And his art made me want to dig into the character further. And this page is from the very issue I think of first when I think about his renowned run – the one issue story titled “ALIEN!”. Every page is a winner art-wise and the story was a tragic one that really made you think…y’know, a perfect type of Surfer story :) And of course there’s some great action!

I’ve got the final page to this issue (https://www.comicartfans.com/gallerypiece.asp?piece=1426201) but wanted one featuring the primary antagonist, the alien dragon. And this one checked that box big time. Here, the dragon has just recalled to the Surfer the story of how the inhabitants of the planet they’re on wrongfully killed his entire race (which is 100% true) and the dragon will let nothing stop him until he gets his revenge, i.e., kills the inhabitants in kind. The Surfer understands but of course cannot let the dragon continue his killing even if his reasoning may be best reasoning you could possibly have. And the dragon ain’t havin’ it.

Some nice Steve Englehart dialogue, and got the Surfer in 3 of 4 panels. I always thought Lim and inker Tom Christopher did a great job showing the Surfer’s skin/board sheen. That 2nd panel is cool in that the dragon is shadowed in to highlight his words and the dark place he’s clearly in. And that bottom half splash was the closer for me. Great energy and detail letting you know that a real throwdown’s just begun!

Thanks, fellow CAFer Nathan S, for letting me have this beaut!

This is such a great Surfer page by Ron Lim, the definitive artist on that character for the past thirty years.  Tom Christopher is an underrated inker who perfectly delineated Ron's pencils.  This page is gorgeous.  Congratulations, my friend!

Lim's run on the Surfer was one one of the great artistic runs of that era.  His handle on the characters and the zaniness of space were hard to beat!

Right!  I hadn't thought of the word "zaniness" but there definitely was some of that in this run and Lim was really the perfect ar-teest to visually tell those stories!  And Christopher to accentuate through them tight and detailed inks!  Thanks, gene, and all, for the comments!

Love how the tension builds in those first three panels, and then the action EXPLODES off the page!!  There is nothing like Ron Lim Surfer.  I hope to acquire a wonderful example like this one some day.  Congrats!!

VERY true, Marc.  Like I say, hard to top great looking art that also happens to take you back to them younger years.  And that reminds me...I guess maybe I should start working on getting something for my kids?!  ;)  Thanks, man!

Just as John Buscema was the definitive Silver Surfer artist for a previous generation, so to did Ron Lim become that same thing for a new generation. He had a style perfectly suited for the character and this page demonstrates that!

Super cool page from early in that great run (as I find Ron's art in later part of the run to be less tightly inked). I would love to add one as well to my collection.

Great page, K, jam-packed with detail and excellent inking and storytelling choices...  I love Paul P’s comment about how things explode in that last panel after being so tightly cooped up in the top tier.  The Surfer has always been Marvel’s  “the thinking person’s character” since his very first appearance, and it sounds like that fine tradition is put front and center in this story as well (alas, I have not read it!) - he’s such a perfect character for that role.  This one must be (inter)stellar to see in person - I bet it makes quite an impression!  Congrats again on this beauty!

It's funny...I had no idea the Surfer was "the thinking person's character" when I first read this story back in the day.  Found that out a lot later!  But the story definitely fits the mold.  Read it when you get a chance and let me know what you think!  Thanks, man!

My life is my vengeance! I swore they would die! Someone should introduce Alien Dragon to Lobo, I think they'd get along famously. This is a prime Lim Surfer example. A beauty all around. Congrats!

Great page from a great run.  It was good to see the Surfer ride the spaceways again, but it did not feel cosmic enough till Lim got on the book.  Great example!

This run is cemented in my memory and Ron's SS issues were always among the first I would read when they dropped. Love the visuals on this page - congrats!

Late's fine, Son of David, just glad you made it!

It's funny, when these dragons arrived on this planet, the native inhabitants thought the same thing. But they took that sentiment too far, hence this guy's unrelenting retribution.  If you haven't read it, check it out!  Thanks, man!

Ron Lim was born to draw Silver Surfer. This was the book I was most excited about picking up at my local comic shop grawing up. Great page!

So I didn't pick up SS regularly, as I didn't hit the comic shop regularly, but I was ALWAYS drawn to the SS covers, especially the early Lim issues.  Then opening up the book?!  Forget about it!  I flip through some of those books now, and man, they hold up so well.  Glad youl like, Ken, and appreciate the add!
