DescriptionBeing the holidays I’m closing out the year with pieces that take me back to some of my favorite books as a kid. And this one’s a biggie – a Cap splash by renowned Cap (among other things!) artist Mike Zeck! Fellow collectors who know me know I love Zeck. He’d be in my top 3 artists and might be my favorite ‘80s artist due to his work on Secret Wars and Kraven’s Last Hunt. And the Punisher which I found later. Then Cap which I went back to after. And he did some of my favorite covers from the time, including the iconic usual suspects, but also the Marvel Tales covers reprinting the ASM Punisher stories. Definitely one of the very first artists where I remember recognizing and really liking his work and wanting to see more. And when I think “Cap” I think “Zeck” first. So yeah…a biggie :)As I write this, this piece is already posted on CAF 3 other times, so it’s switched hands a few times. I’ve always dug it but hadn’t made an earnest effort to acquire it prior to now because of other collector goals, including a Zeck Kraven’s Last Hunt page, which I did achieve. But when I saw it on a ComicLink auction not long ago I was ALL over it. I wanted a more splashy Zeck piece and this one totally hit the mark as, IMO, the shot of Cap here is one of the best from the run, including the covers. Got that cartoony animated look but with realistic proportions and nice detail accentuated by common collaborator inker John Beatty. And dynamic! With shield at the ready. Love how he’s breaking through the window at the same time he’s breaking through the panel – “KRASH!” To me an indicative example of Zeck’s Cap and comic work in general. See the last bit of dialogue – “then slay Captain America”. Right. I’d suggest you get in that car and bone out. Still on the hunt for the right Secret Wars and Punisher pieces but am content with this beaut for now! That said, let me know if y’all got any leads :) Happy holidays to all, and here’s to 2020 ending (can't come soon enough) and 2021 beginning. And, as always, THANK YOU for looking! Social/Sharing |

Great classic Zeck page! Love that huge image of Cap with his arm swinging right off the bottom panel! Nice one!

Congrats on this amazing Zeck Cap example! It is SO dynamic, and as you say, Cap is bursting through the window even as his arm breaks through the panel. Gets the heart pumping for sure. Congrats!

Yeah, man, exactly. He had that classic John Buscema kinda style but took it into the '80s with his own flair. And when you flip through his books the pure illustration and of course the storytelling hold up so well. I often find myself comparing a lot of modern artists to him. Thanks, George, and all, for the great comments!

I know Batroc isn't on these pages, but I can't think of a more appropriate comment than "SACRE BLEU!" The Zeck pieces in your collection are absolutely amazing - this one may even "beat out" your Spidey page. Love it; full of panel-busting, star-spangled goodness. Congrats, man, and have an absolutely stellar holidays! Ho-ho-holy moley, but that's a gorgeous example of a Zeck page...!

I wouldn't say it "beats out" the Spidey page but I'd say it's right up there. How can I begin to compare 2 such great examples?! And if (check that, WHEN) the Punisher and Secret Wars examples come we'll fall into even more of a conundrum. A conundrum I'd gladly be a part of! MERCI MON AMI :)

Zeck did so much of my favorite work, too. And KRASH! Here's Cap! I love how he lays over all the panels, crashing into the baddies scheme. And that determined look. A perfect Zeck page. Congrats!

That's right, man - laying on top of all 3 panels! "You can't stop him, you can only hope to contain him!" And that often doesn't work! I agree - a perfect Zeck piece. No bias at all ;) Thanks, J!

When this piece turned up and sold at ComicLink, I thought "This piece is a 3 panel page, but with a giant image of Cap like that, it is for all intents and purposes a splash page. Whoever won this got themselves a bargain!". Truly a spectacular piece, and I agree with everything you say about Zeck being one of THE quintessential artists of the 1980's! Congrats, Kahlil, a magnificent way to end off the year!

I'd agree, Rube. You'll see a lot of semi splashes in my gallery - love the storytelling mixed with the splashy shot. And as you note, often a bargain compared to a technical full splash. Also like you say, with Cap front and center and busting out of panel 3 into the other 2, I 100% thought I should post it as a splash! Zeck can do no wrong! Thanks!

This is a great page with a great bottom image that gets real meta real quick. And what good is a shield if Cap doesn't use it to break through windows?

What a superb action piece by the team of Zeck and Beatty. This team predates when I first started reading the book but years later I discovered the DeMatteis/Zeck/Beatty run and found out why it is so highly regarded. I don't think Mike Zeck is capable of drawing Cap in a bad pose and the main figure on this page is spectacular. Congratulations!

Believe it or not I was offered this page when I first started. I was focused on other things at the time so no need to thank me for passing on it 😜. But seriously, Im really glad it made its way to not only a great collection but even better friend.

Great Mike Zeck Cap half splash! I think this pose of Cap has been replicated or homaged several times due to its dynamic and fitting quality to Cap!

woah! Look at that giant Cap!
MIke Zeck is truly great. After Kirby, he's the artist who best embodies Cap for me.
Amazing page!
