DescriptionJust saw the trailer posted a couple days ago for the upcoming MCU Shang-Chi film so thought I’d post this newer pick-up, done by a top TOP artist for me in Mike Zeck, along with inks by the great Gene Day.Just a straight up killer battle page, pitting Shang-Chi against rival martial arts master the Shadow Slasher, in the latter’s first appearance. Zeck deftly displaying his action scene storytelling skills, providing a great flow as you move down the page, ending with Shang-Chi winning the round. The Shadow Slasher is down but not out - check the book out. A classic “you think the bad guy’s done…nope, he’s back, and multiple more times” story :) Here you got kung fu chops, a stab, AND a kick – the more Shang-Chi moves on a page the better! Pretty cool that the throwdown’s happening in a tree, with both combatants making use of said surroundings. Lastly, got 6 lettered sound effects over 5 panels – love that in older pages :) I’m trying to check off a nice example from some of Zeck’s Marvel runs. Still got Secret Wars and the Punisher to go – may be tough but we’ll see! Just glad to check off Shang-Chi here along with the pages I have from Spidey (Kraven’s Last Hunt) and Cap. Thanks, Mike Burkey, and Bill CAF Cox, with the assist! Social/Sharing |

Swooof! Shump! Chud! Fratch! Shrash! Wow, this page really does have excellent flow to the action. I love how both characters make use of their environs for makeshift weapons, and how Shang-Chi deliveres that deciding chopping blow to end that portion of the battle anyway. Mike Zeck is such a master. Gotta be jazzed by Gene Day's inks as well. A total gem, congratst

Such a fantastic action page, and what I love even more is that the entire battle takes place in a tree! How crazy!

Damn!!! Zeck could draw, but this page is insane. The action, the angles, the details! Just a fabulous pick up. Congrats.

KAH-THOOM! ;) That's lots of sweet, new onomatopoeia on that page. And what an amazing battle page! Battling in trees is so old school Kung fu movie. Love it! And that inking from Day is perfect over Zeck's clean style. He put the heavy inks behind and to the side of the characters, which really makes the action pop, imo. Very cool, Kahlil. Big congrats!

Yes, some nice onomatopoeia (BTW I'm impressed if you didn't have to look up how to spell that word) for sure! And the tree setting...definitely upped the classic, kind of fantastical, kung fu vibe of the page. A big draw for sure in my picking this up. I didn't notice those heavier background inks...nice catch! In a way, good that I didn't notice, right?! Gotta love those subtle touches that draw you to a piece but you don't know why! Thanks, J!

Most MOKF Zeck pages suffer from being early in his career and formative years AND from heavy inking but this one is a truly great example.

You know, I've kind of been on the lookout for a page for a bit, and there's been some availability, and some pages I thought were great but others I wasn't interested in. Your points may have something to do with the latter. Definitely hyped for this example, though, as you note - great example that that hits on all cylinders! Thanks, F!

You did right holding out for a better example. You can't have a page from a comic with Kung Fu in the title without a little Kung Fu in it!

Yes, LOL! I don't think I specifically thought of it that way but you nailed it. And a LOT of kung fu?! Even better :) Thanks for the add, John!

Legend tells us of a legendary warrior whose Kung Fu skills were the stuff of legend.

AWESOME page, my man! I'm certain this one falls squarely into the "SO much cooler in person" / "scans don't do it justice" camp, thanks to those outstanding Gene Day inks. Look at all those leaves (should the inker be credited as "Green Day" here?)...! Gorgeous page with the great flow keeps the eye traipsing through the branches (one could say it has great...."flowliage"?). This one kicks Ash! I have an urge to see 'Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon' again.
