Description

Starting out Jade Giant June jovially with this Jocular John Byrne gem! My first Byrne piece! And today’s my birthday so I thought it was a good a day to post this RAGING get :)

When I think of the Hulk the first 2 names that pop in my head are Keown and Byrne. Keown for obvious reasons but Byrne…maybe not so obvious as he only drew 6 issues of Incredible Hulk (314 to 319). He actually wrote, penciled, and inked those issues, with an inking assist on backgrounds by Keith Williams.

But those handful of issues are seared into my brain. I looked at my super beat up copy of issue 317 ALL the time as a kid. So many great battle pages between the Hulk and Doc Samson, and it was a unique story with the Hulk and Bruce Banner being physically separated. I found some of Byrne’s other work, including the X-Men stuff for which he’s rightfully known most for, later, but from a nostalgia perspective the Hulk is what rises to the top for me.

And I got him here vs. Doc! Both get some booming punches in, which was the big draw for me. Love the swinging arc lines. And you gotta like the mirror conflict of the top and bottom panels. Hulk vs. Samson and Betty vs. her dad, though Betty clearly has the upper hand in her sequence, laying into Thunderbolt Ross right before marrying Bruce in the final page of the issue.

I happened to pick up a number of Hulk pieces recently so I'm gonna go with that theme for the next couple weeks – stay tuned! Dave, T Shen, Octavio…. ;)

Thanks, Bechara at Nostalgic Investments for the piece, and thanks all, for looking!

Happy Cake Day!  You've just levelled up!  Starting it off with some heavyweight brawling befitting your collection!  Betty mixing it up is amazing!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!  A brilliant way to kick it off, for sure!  The Byrne run, although FAR too short, is one of my favorites, too, and to have a page from it (much less a brutal throwdown page at that - and those are just the Betty panels! :) ) is icing on all sorts of cakes, it would seem.  I loved the "two-tiered" approach to the storytelling this issue (with "Hulk stuff" on a vertical tier / half of all the pages, and Bruce and Betty's story on the other...) and how intensely you feel the inevitable "wedding crash" happening...  Not only by General Ross (who showed up a few pages before yours here), but (you just know) by the Hulk and Sampson... only to have it turn out that Hulk throws Sampson through a different - and empty - church, instead of Bruce and Betty's.  A wonderful "yoink" by Master Byrne.

And I find it SO hard to believe that this is your first Byrne piece; your collection is so well-rounded and extensive, I am shocked you didn't feature some of his work before now (and then to be able to display THIS...!).  Congrats on crossing off a big name from your 'still to get' list!  A Byrne in the hand is worth two in the bush!

Happy birthday, K!  Looking forward to seeing the other Green Giant Goodness coming up!

Good point on the "yoink" - shifty, Byrne, shifty :)  Glad you like the page, man, and were into this short but sweet run as much as I was!

As far as being my first Byrne...yeah, lol.  He was on the list but I guess I had some others taking priority, as odd as that sounds?!  I recently said it was time to check this box, though, so glad to have done it!  And I'll let others battle it out over the X-Men, FF, Supes stuff, etc...I'm good with good ol' greenskin here.  Or more than good :)

And thanks, Jason and ALL, for the comments and birthday well wishes!  Another year younger ;)

LOL!  My bad, man.  Feel free to post some Kirby BP.  Well...that doesn't equate.  I DO have one of those ;)  Seriously though, thanks!  When I think I "Byrne" I think "Hulk" and vice versa, so there it is.  And was lucky enough his Hulk stuff, though not cheap (relative term there), ain't as pricey as some of his other work.  So...there it is again!  Got more Hulk pieces coming this month and next, man, so stay tuned!  It looks like from guys you do have pieces from :)

Happy Birthday K!  What a great page!  I love the first panel and also the third.  I like the third because you can see how big the Hulk's fist is compared to Doc's head.  Great pick up!!!

Byrne was so prolific, that everyone has a different sweet spot for his work. For some it's X-men. For me Supes and clearly for you the HULK! Being a lazy cafer- I didn't double check before commenting - but I feel like you now have a couple of Byrne pages from this run?! Just fantastic!! Congrats and HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!

Nope, first page from the run AND first Byrne overall! Happy to join the club. And work on that "lazy" thing, man ;) Thanks, duke!

Happy Birthday, Kahlil! The Hulk got you a massive uppercut for your birthday. Doc got you a hospital bill...For a smart guy, he sure doesn't learn the lesson to not go toe-to-toe with the big green punching machine. Man, I'm right with you on Byrne Hulk nostalgia. I had this one coming every month by subscription, and I couldn't wait. The way he drew the Hulk was so savage, and the haymakers! I loved this run. A fitting birthday present to yourself. :) Gamma sized congrats! 🎂

Smart dude but I remember how well he was holding his own against the Hulk! I thought, "well, he DOES have green hair" :) I can picture you just a'waitin' for the next issue in the mail! The action really jumped off the page. Thanks, J!

Happy Birthday my friend!!  And what a birthday present!!  We should ALL be this generous to ourselves on our special day.  I know I read these Byrne Hulk issues once upon a time, but I definitely need to revisit them because I've forgotten how great Byrne was on this title.  He is such an amazing story teller.  Massive congrats to you, K, and I look forward to your upcoming Hulk posts!

Back when this came out, Byrne was THE MAN at Marvel. Almost every reader was a fan, and those fans followed him onto whatever title he did next. When it was announced that he'd be moving onto the Hulk, my favourite character and title at the time, it was a comic fan's dream come true, so you can imagine how much of a nightmare that dream quickly turned into when it was then announced he'd be leaving after only 6 issues plus that fabulous issue of Fanfare!

But the art still resonates, and this page gives me the best of both worlds. Beautiful images of Hulk and Samson going toe to toe, and on the bottom, something I had waited seemingly forever for: Betty finally growing a pair and putting General Ross in his place with some very stingingly truthful words. Superb! HAPPY BIRTHDAY, KAHLIL!

I've heard that story before, Ruben! "Bryne on Hulk! Yes! Then...not." :( Well we did get what we got, my friend, which is better than nothin' as they say! And yes that Fanfare issue killed! Lastly, "give it to him, Betty!" Thanks, man!

The Hulk has to be the most serious usher ever. Samson should not of tried to cut line and move up closer. Some serious conquences.

And some sage advice from someone who knows.

Hulk: "Wait in line". Samson: "But I'm a doctor. And I've got gamma irradiated long green locks done up a la Steven Seagal. And have you EVER seen anyone rock an outfit like this?!" Hulk: "ARRHH!" *WHAP* Thanks, John :)
