DescriptionContinuing ‘80s nostalgic adds with my first piece by Steve Lightle! I loved the Simonson X-Factor run, and this was a one-off fill-in issue shortly after the Fall of the Mutants arc. Walt did the issue before and issue after (speaking of the latter, see my only published Walt piece from issue #33 here - https://www.comicartfans.com/gallerypiece.asp?piece=1401550), and I remember doing a double take when seeing the cover and first page of this issue. But I was liking what I was seeing. My first exposure to Lightle’s work that I can remember. I loved Walt’s stuff, and was happy to see it back, but I was also impressed by this different look. Where Walt was edgy, angular, and cartoony, this was smoother and had a more realistic bent. Particularly the faces. So yes! With the impression made, I’m glad to add a page, to say the least! The Avengers (actually aliens posting as them) have just breached Ship, and 3 X-Factor members are running to see what’s up. And they get a warm welcome from faux Thor and faux Mjolnir. Just love the faces in that middle panel, particularly Bobby’s. A realistic face but in slick ice form. I remember that panel from kid days. Then you got Jean realizing they’re under attack and getting Scott out of the way :) I like the way her telekinetic energy is going through the “O” in “FTOOM!” Happy to have another page with X folk in those X-Factor uniforms – I actually have a jam piece of the team I’m almost done with. One team member to go! Bonus in this issue is we get a page with Cameron Hodge’s first discussion with N’Astirh, which leads him to being the immortal crazy creepy Hodge we know from X-Tinction Agenda – one of my favorite baddies due to that arc! So much energy in the top and bottom portion of the page, contrasted nicely with that still panel in the middle. The circular bold panel outline really brings home that particular exciting image. And yeah, so cool that her telekenetic blast goes right through the second "O" of "FTOOM!" Haha, love it. Great page!

At the time I didn't appreciate how talented Steve Lightle was. Amazing page.

Wow! I really love the still, no background middle panel. It is a nice calm, stopping moment in the midst of chaos.

Love the art style from this series. Especially the thick inking and Ice Man makes this pick up extra cool!

I don't know
But I think Cyclops be fallin' Ftoom
Dropping so quickly
Maybe I should keep hands to myself
Leading so blind into hammer
Iceman trying, face will tell you
That Steve shines through,
That Lightle rocks the page
And there's no hiding, drawn with feeling
But Jean's tired of holding this Cyclops by head
Steve's been drawing all the time
Just reading about ya
I don't know Thirty-two
I think he's fallin' Ftoom
I've been waiting all my life
And now I found ya
I don't know what he do
I think he's fallin' Ftoom
He's fallin' Ftoom

Thanks, as always, Mr. Wai!

Jealous congrats on that one, K. As a massive Lightle fan, I'm still looking for a page from that memorable fill in ;)

As a massive fan of Lightle's art on Legion over at DC Comics, I was astounded when the solicitations said this issue would be drawn by Lightle. So great to see his work at Marvel for a change! I once owned the cover, but pages from this issue are really scarce, so I love seeing them. Congrats, K!

Wow, you owned the cover at one point?! Super striking image. I imagine your sweet spot being more DC was a FACTOR in you moving it? ;) Sorry - yes, that was too easy. And cheesy.
And see below from Eric DLS - looks like he had a chance at the cover at one point! Mayhaps I may take a turn? Lol, if popped up I'm sure it would be out of reach! All good, though. Definitely happy to have this page!
Thanks for the add, Ruben!

Nah, I'm actually more of a lifelong Marvel guy. It's just that in the decades since I quit reading weekly comics and stopped collecting them, I've seen what amounts to one disastrous decision after another to the titles and characters, so I just got burned out on Marvel. Since I had not read nearly as much DC books during my reading/collecting heyday, In the last decade or so I just realized that there was an entire new universe full of characters who look cool that I've never read any or much about, just waiting for me to explore, which is why you've seen me getting more DC art than Marvel.
But no, I didn't sell the X-Factor cover for that reason. Like Eric, I was a massive Lightle fan and believe it or not, I felt the #32 cover was the best of the entire series. But after some time had passed, I felt it wasn't quite fitting in with whatever I was collecting at the time and for no reason other than that, I sold it. No regrets though, life's too short for that. For me, it's more than enough just having owned it once and gotten enjoyment from it for that amount of time. Enjoy this page, bro!

Lightle was one of the best comic book artists of his generation. I wish we had gotten more Marvel work from him since he clearly knew how to handle the characters. Great looking page!

Aaaaargh!!!!! Cool page from a very special issue. But it brings up a very painful memory for me. I'm a HUGE Lightle fan, so when this issue first came out, I was over the moon. Nothing against Walt (who I also idolize), but when I saw Lightle on the book, I thought maybe he might be taking over as the new series artist. Alas, it was just a one-shot. To this day, it remains one of my favorite issues in the title's run (and that's counting two fill-in issues by Art Adams). Of course my absolute favorite piece was the insane cover by Lightle. Now one would think that if I ever had the chance to grab that, I would jump on it without hesitation. Well, as it turns out, I did. Some years back in San Diego, a dealer actually had the cover for sale. In hindsight, I should've just grabbed it. But at the time, I thought his price was pretty outrageous for a Lightle cover. Of course that would not be the case today. I had wondered all these years if he had sold it at that show. So I actually contacted him a short while back to see if he still had it. He just laughed and told me it was long gone. Sigh!

Wow! I'm right there with you in it being a fave from the run. And how many times can we say "overpriced then, but not NOW", lol. Hindsight is truly 20/20 with this stuff. And at least you closed the loop with the dealer, albeit many a year later! And see above in the chat. Ruben owned it at one point Maybe there's a trail?! :) In any case, glad you like the book and the page, and appreciate the comments, man!

At first, I liked the middle panel more, but that FTOOM panel is really growing on me. I really like how all the action goes through the sound effect text, from Jean's psi-blast to Mjolnir. Congrats!

A lot of well-deserved Lightle love on this thread--but he's still under-rated in many circles. This is a great example--when it was available I kept thinking "Someone smart is going to snap this up." Glad it ended up in the right place!
