Description

Its an unwritten rule of comics that every good superhero team has its team of opposites. The Justice League has the Injustice League. The Avengers have the Masters of Evil. The Brotherhood has its opposite number too: The Insurrection.

Why that name? Because this isn't just a group of random villains I put together. There's a story idea behind it. During Jack Kirby's run on BLACK PANTHER, he introduced a villain for T'Challa named Princess Zanda. That's her at the forefront of this piece. She was the ruler of Narobia, a country neighboring Wakanda. A conniving, power-hungry, self-centered ruthless rhymes-with-witch who'd do anything to obtain what she wanted. After the Kirby Panther series, Zanda wasn't used very much. Apparently, at some point she was overthrown because she turned up decades later in Reginald Hudlin's BLACK PANTHER run in exile living in a hotel suite in the south of France fuming over the news of T'Challa's then-upcoming marriage to Ororo Munroe.

Damn you Marvel for breaking that marriage up. What could have been.

Anyway, I always thought Zanda had really great potential as a villain. She certainly wouldn't take losing the throne lying down. So, what if she hired a group of mercenary villains, and went back to Narobia to overthrown her successor and regain the throne?
Wit' me now? And that brings us to right here.

Okay, I am betting that no one can name all the villains on this piece. You may know some. You may know most. But no one knows them all. Test yourself without peeking at the answers below. I trust you. That's my first mistake.

STUMPED???? Well, here we go (starting top left and going clockwise, more or less):

Condor: This winged bad boy debuted in the pages of THE MAN CALLED NOVA, although his appearance had changed quite a bit by the time he made his reappearance years later in the Erik Larsen written NOVA series.

Harrier (aka Cardinal): Debuted in the pages of AMAZING SPIDER-MAN as a member of a group called The Jury. He later briefly joined The Thunderbolts.

Cardiaxe: Okay, if you got this guy's name then I KNOW you cheated!! He is a very obscure villain that appeared in one issue of a short-lived Marvel series entitled NIGHTWATCH. There's no way you could have possibly known that.

Chemistro: I suspect that some of you may know him. He debuted in the pages of POWER MAN AND IRON FIST, back in the day.

Princess Zanda: That's her up front, like I told you earlier. Pay attention!

Cyborgirl: I think she debuted in a CYBORG limited series. She went on to become a Wonder Woman villain.

Spear: He first -- and probably last -- appeared in the pages of LUKE CAGE, POWER MAN.

Phreak: Again, if you got her name, then you cheated. She debuted in the second DEATHLOK series, written by the late, great Dwayne McDuffie. Don't think she's been seen since.

Bison: First appeared in the pages of THUNDERSTRIKE, and later turned up in THUNDERBOLTS as a member of the Masters of Evil. Yeah, you thought it was Man-Bull didn't you? Admit it!

Now, the artist that brought this to fruition: Eric Koda. I have to tell you, if you haven't taken the time to commission Eric, you are missing out big time! If you want quality art at affordable prices, you simply cannot beat Eric! You may or may not know him from his work on the X-MEN: TO PROTECT AND SERVE limited series, but trust me, give him a shot. You will not be sorry. Thanks, Eric for a super job.

And I like how this's listed as an Interior Page. I hope this's Damon teasing us with the first page of his indy produced Brotherhood comic.

Or, it could be that I just inadvertantly listed this as an interior page when I meant to show it as a commission. Thanks for pointing that out.:-)

I had most of them right other than thinking Harrier was Mach 1 from the T-Bolts. Love the new look Condor! Wonder if Eric ever thought he would be doing two commissions in less than a year with that guy! Probably not.:) Love this group Damon, only you could have put these guys together! Outstanding work(as always),by Eric K!

Rob, I'd venture to say that you and I are the only two guys on the planet that have a commission with Condor in it.:-)

I'm not going to mention that I already had seperate commission ideas that included Bison and Spear, but those are for another day. After seeing Eric's take on Bison, said commission may include Eric!:)

I'd love to see what you come up with for Spear and Bison.

What! no mention of Zanda's appearance in Black panther "Enemy of the State2"?? I worked Priest to use her and had we not Hudlin might not have even thought of doing the same later Also, call me an old fogey but I prefer the original Chemistro mask...made him unique IMHO. Can't wait to ink this baby;-)

I did remember Zanda's appearance during "Enemy of the State," but seeing as how she was reduced to working taking orders at KFC, I felt it wasn't her finest hour.:-) Incidentally -- and this is a true story -- I suggested to Hudlin that he use Princess Zanda somehow. He used to frequent the Black Panther message board -- before some malcontents turned it into a nest of vipers -- and he expressed interest in the idea. Its also why Triathlon turned up at the Panther/Storm wedding.

Sorry, meant to post that last reply under this name. Now it looks like Inkwell Awards (Bob Almond) was replying to himself. That was me (also aka Inkwell Awards).

Incredible! Inspiring! Insidiously intriguing! These and numerous additional "in-" words and phrases come springing to mind when I see the Insurrection. The commissioning brilliance of Owens and the potent pencil of Koda combine to create one insanely intense supervillain invasion. (There, see? It happened again.)

You've always been part of the "in" crowd, Michael.:-)

Love the concept, the name, and the execution. I must admit I failed the name test miserably. I thought Chemistro was Thunderball from the Wrecking Crew and Harrier was Mach-2. The only one I got right was Princess Zanda.

Not to worry, these aren't exactly big name villains.:-)

I love a piece with so much thought going into it. I love the method behind your madness and it is a nice piece but it is a group that has legs! Great theme. I'd love to read this battle.

Hey, Jason! Super-villain groups tend to have lots of turnover, but as long as I can think of scenarios to use them in, they'll be around.:-)

I would think Zanda was exiled first in CJP's story...why else would she have to resort to working in a fast food restaurant?? Oh, and Spear made a 'blink and you'll miss him' cameo in Spider-Island: Heroes for Hire on shot that I inked like three years ago. Bob Almond
