DescriptionThis Submariner #1 cover was based on a pencilled layout by Carl Pfeufer in the early Timely Golden Age, but never existed as a finished piece of artwork until Michael T. Gilbert decided to finish it up in 2009. In 2007 Running Press Books published the Marvel Vault, a book devoted to the history of Marvel/Timely/Atlas comics. Inside were a number of unpublished covers and splash page sketches drawn in 1942 for various Timely comics. These sketches were never made into covers until 2009, when Michael T. Gilbert drew them 47 years later! The original sketch (originally planned as a possible ad or splash page to Human Torch #8) has been converted into a Submariner #1 cover, complete with original Timely logo. The art has an image area of 10” x 15” and is drawn in pen and ink on Bristol board. The logo is drawn on the page, but word balloons are pasted on. I purchased this from Michael T. Gilbert in August 2009.Social/Sharing |
