DescriptionMoby Dick is my favorite American novel, and I decided it was time to start commissioning interpretations of the classic. Daniel absolutely floored me with his interpretation, capturing the majestic stature of the white whale in a way few else could. Thanks to Felix Comic Art for arranging this masterpiece.Social/Sharing |

one of his best commissions. Love the composition element of the mouth pointing at the men in the boat. How big is this?

A pretty amazing commission. How often do you see such blatant yonic (dentata and all) imagery in a Moby Dick illustration..but it works.

It's a bold choice and givens Moby a clear villainy that many often try to push against. I think most portray him more as a force of nature, which makes Ahab's obsession even more troubling and heartbreaking.

A literal monster of a commission. Put this cover on a rerelease of the book, and it would jump off the shelves. Congrats on an amazing piece from someone who just can't bring himself to roll the commission dice anymore.

Great comission! Love the composition and shading, really brings it all together and makes you feel the scale of the whale.

This is a great piece and it makes me want to rethink what I ask for commissions...

Thanks Reba.
A lot of artists are reluctant to do something like this, but those who are into it seem to really take their skills to another level.

Came here to see your new Deadly Class pages, but saw this again in your featured pieces. It's in my top-5 pieces DWJ has ever done. Ever, inc published. There's such menace and danger - something you rarley see in the standard book covers.

Thanks, it's a treasure. He's such an astounding storyteller. The way he can tell a story with a single image should make him the world's #1 cover artist, if he wasn't inclined to tell his own stories.

Wow! Phenomenal commission by Daniel Warren Johnson! What an unexpected direction to take a request for Moby Dick! But it's sheer genius! By portraying the white whale breaking from the sea beside a small boat, we are confronted with the sheer size of the whale and can feel the fear that the men in the boat must be experiencing. Just a wonderful piece from a brilliant artist. Congratulations on picking up such a magnificent commission!
