DescriptionAs I've said before, I really don't collect panel pages. But every now and then I'm offered a piece I can't resist. This twice-up page by Jack Kirby is from only the eighth issue of the X-Men (1964). And it has all the elements that I look for in comic art: Lots of characters, a memorable villain and most importantly, plenty of action. I love this sequence of Unus the Untouchable being attacked by the Angel while he calmly folds his civilian clothes to reveal his costume. I love the pose of Angel in the first scene, like a jet fighter zooming in on its target, then in the second panel drawn only as speed lines to emphasize his velocity and finally, in the center panel, being effortlessly knocked aside by Unus' power. This is followed by the scene of Cyclops ineffectually blasting Unus with his power beams. The page ends with Unus attempting to engage Cyclops in a fist fight! It's beautifully composed and powerfully penciled by Kirby. Add in the gorgeous inks of Chic Stone and you have one heck of a page. But like I said, I really don't collect panel pages...I think.Social/Sharing |

"What a stroke of luck! Now I won't have to find you before I can polish you off!" Unus is bringing the confidence, I see. I really dig his slow change into costume, too. I can see why you couldn't pass up this panel page, it's beautiful Kirby/Stone work. Big congrats!

Great piece. And remember, panel pages are why we bought the books and fell in love with comics.
Congrats!

Love it, Bill! Look at Unus's shorts. Real first appearance of Venom as a symbiote costume?!!

Symbiotic shorts has a certain ring to it. Could this be a what if story for a future marvel writer, where a cunningly disguied Venom travels back to the dawn of the Marvel Age to eliminate the heroes?

Looks clean as a whistle, and no Lee panel comments.

Okay, okay! I see what you're doing. You know I don't collect panel pages either and you're trying to show me the folly of my ways by posting a panel page that's better than most of the covers and splashes I own. Thanks Bill, I thought we were friends.

This may not be a cover, but you sure don't have any trouble picking nice panel pages, Bill!

Great page! I had this issue in the 1980s (I could only afford a really beat up copy of it) so it was kind of thrilling seeing it on CAF! Thanks for sharing!

Unus! Kirby! Stone! What else can a collector ask for? This is a great example of the King's work. Congratulations, my friend!

Perfect storytelling by Kirby, but also a great example of how much extra drama Stan infused into each page with his dialogue while they were creating these characters.

This amazing page is a cause of grave concern. I knew a guy who collected panel pages... he grew old and died. There is a 100% statistical correlation between collecting panel pages and the eventual permanent, irreversible cessation of all biological functions that sustain a living organism, either via natural causes, illness, or foul play. No comparable studies exist linking human mortality with collecting covers and splashes. All unenlightened self interest on my part aside, collecting panel pages is a quick road to ruin, and sometimes it's safest to stay in one's lane. Also, congrats on a great page!

X-men #8 was the earliest back issue I ever bought in the 1980s, so this one hits the nostalgic spot for me. Awesome page with great content for sure.
