DescriptionMONSTER SCORE. I've always loved the early Atlas/Marvel monster comics of the late '50s and early '60s like Tales to Astonish, Tales of Suspense and Journey into Mystery. And here, six of those classic monsters--Diablo, Blip, Groot, Taboo, Goom, and Titan/Xemnu return to take on the most famous Marvel monster of them all--The Hulk. How cool is that? Best of all, the cover is drawn by Jack Kirby, who co-created the Hulk as well as many of those other classic monsters. IMHO it's one of the most memorable Hulk covers ever and I'm super excited to add it to my collection.NOTE: The original cover art is a montage, with all six classic monsters drawn separately, then arranged on the board around a huge portrait of the Hulk. Two of the drawings are stats--Blip and Goom--but the others are all original art, including the large Hulk. The cover was pencilled by Kirby (See the photocopy of the original pencil from the Jack Kirby Museum) with possible revisions by John Romita Sr. The inks are attributed to Jack Abel with possible touch-ups by Romita. The art has been cleaned and preserved by professional restorer Robert Dennis. Social/Sharing |

This is so cool. Art Adams did a great recreation of this cover and I've always wanted to se the original. Classic Kirby. No surprise it pops up in your gallery. Congrats!

Classic Atlas monsters all right. Love it. Not sure that Diablo and Taboo aren't the same creature!
Congrats!

Congratulations on this acquisition, Bill! As a huge Hulk fan, this was always one of my favourite issues. In a bit of irony, Abel was generally NOT the best inker on Sal, but somehow in this issue, his inks look fantastic! So great to be able to get a relatively rare Hulk cover, too, and featuring all the early Atlas monsters Kirby created! Curious though, are you sure there is no original art underneath the Goom and Blip stats?

Yeah, there's no art under the stats. You can see from the pencil that the Marvel editors chose to flip the positions of Blip and Goom, so they statted them to make them face the opposite direction.

Absolute beauty. Did it require heavy restoration?
Not at all. But there were some ugly glue stains that needed removal. Plus, in some places the glue had dried out and pieces were literally falling off the page. Robert Dennis did an awesome job preserving and conserving the art.

This cover makes me think of what a Hulk nightmare might look like - except the hulk doesn't have nightmares. He give's them. Wow! Kirby doing what Kirby does best. Huge congrats on a very fun pick up. Especially love seeing Groot on their (or as I first thought - wow - what a cool tree monster)!

Amazing! I know not everyone loves Jack Abel, but I'm a fan of his inking and can't recall seeing him over Kirby before.

Monster score, indeed! I think I see some Romita in the Xemnu. Man, all those monsters, and a great Kirby Hulk front and center? How can you go wrong? You can't. Huge congrats!

As you said, one of the most memorable Hulk covers. And arguably the best Hulk face ever on a cover. Stellar!

Robert Dennis did a superb job on the conservation. A Kirby Hulk is a grail for any collection; congratulations! I can't get over how dynamic the figures are. Also much as I love Joe Sinnott's work, it's great to see Jack Abel's work like this. Well done, my friend!

Man, oh man... too cool! I love Kirby's pre-hero monsters, and a gorgeous Hulk cover by his co-creator is a grail-level piece of art! Looks like Romita shaggied up Greenskin's hair and eyebrows... the rest looks like Jack Abel to me, turning in a great inking job, here.

Wow, such a truly awesome, classic cover! For those who are familiar with the old Atlas era/pre-superhero covers, seeing those monsters makes your brain instantly picture each of those classic old Silver Age covers (somehow all at once!?!? Or is that just me?). And that Hulk image front and center, just amazing! Wait, where's Monsteroso? Just kidding. So much to love about this cover. Huge congrats on acquiring it, and the excellent preservation work to keep this gem looking great for years to come!

A Kirby cover of Hulk - such a great score. You know this one should be hanging on a wall somewhere (Museum?); not stashed in some portfolio binder sitting in storage.
