DescriptionIt doesn’t get much better than a cover with the Fantastic Four facing their greatest enemy, Doctor Doom! But that’s just what you get in this fabulous homage to Fantastic Four #39 by John Buscema. He both penciled and inked this cover for the 1987 miniseries “The Marvel Saga: The Official History of the Marvel Universe.” But while Buscema stayed relatively close to the original layout, with the massive figure of Doom looming over the city, he wasn’t content to just copy it, he made significant changes that really amped up the action. In the original, the Fantastic Four have lost their powers and, joined by Daredevil, they move cautiously, clearly fearing Doom's wrath. But Buscema's re-imagined version is not focused on the loss-of-power storyline, so he drew the team all powered up and fearlessly charging into action--The Human Torch has flamed on, Reed Richards is stretching forward, and Sue Storm is turning invisible while Ben Grimm and Daredevil confidently stride forward, fists clenched and ready for battle. IMHO, it's a spirited re-imagining of a Silver Age classic.Social/Sharing |

Wow !! What an incredible cover ! it's rare to see DD sharing a cover with the FF (outside of the big crossovers) and it really couldn't be any better !! John Buscema showed once again why he's one of the industry's greats !!

I loved the Marvel Saga title. This is one of the great covers & is a fantastic alternative to buying the FF #39 cover for $700,000+ (which probably does not exist anyway!).

Last time I checked, I had that in my pockets....My relatives would kill me if I had that much spare cash. Lol. Luckily one of usernames I created recently was Peter Pauper!

A great Kirby cover gets the John Buscema redo and it only happens for special occasions like the reprint series that need new cover for a Marvel key issue. Buscema's take makes Reed and Johnny more dynamic emphasizing Daredevil with a bigger image leading the charge! A marching cover so the M.M.M.S. still lives on!

The original cover this one homages is one of my favourite and most memorable Kirby covers from the original FF run. I've always been partial to the "villain looming overhead" cover layout, no matter how many times it's been used. To have had another legendary Marvel artist do an homage to it was a stroke of genius at the time, especially as he made all the changes you mention in order to still make it somewhat original rather than a direct copy. Congratulations on another fine piece!
