DescriptionCheck out this absolutely stunning cover to Thor #182 from 1970. A faceoff between Doctor Victor Von Doom and Doctor Don Blake! Penciled by the great John Buscema, and inked by the legendary Joe Sinnott, this cover is beautifully composed and masterfully inked. The cover features a powerful drawing of the Monarch of Latveria taking off his mask and revealing his disfigured face to Doctor Blake. Buscema gives Doom an almost superhuman physique here, but the mask that hides his face is a hideous parody of a human face. If this is the face Doom prefers, one can only imagine how much worse the face underneath must be. On the published cover, a word balloon was added, with Doom saying, "Now that you have seen me--without my mask--You cannot leave here alive!" Dr. Blake is shaking in fear as he sees Doom's horribly scarred face. And he seems to be transforming into Thor right before our eyes as the only possible way he can escape death! I love this image of the Thunder God appearing to grow from the meek, mild-mannered Dr. Blake. The whole cover is a striking work of art. John Buscema was the artist who replaced Jack Kirby on Thor and when you look at this cover you can see that he was truly up to the task.NOTE: This cover was slightly altered for publication, with text added and artwork extended, most likely with the use of a production stat. Beautifully illustrated take on the David and Goliath trope. To the Victor go the spoils ;)
Congrats on bringing another all-time classic Marvel cover into the fold!

Another extremely memorable cover for your amazing collection! That ghostly form of Thor growing out of Donald Blake is so eerie ... and so cool! Blake's intense fear, demonstrated by his facial expression and pose, is palpable. And is it any surprise, considering what he is facing? Brilliant add, Bill, congrats!!

What does Doom look like under that mask? Buscema really teases that with Donald Blake's reaction. Oh, you gotta miss those days when Thor had a secret identity! Congrats on a really cool pick up!!

Brilliant move to have Doom holding his mask so you get the impact of it even though he is facing away from the viewer. That, combined with ghost Thor gives us the best of all options on this cover. Congrats Bill!

What a great cover! Love the look of terror on Blake! Big John was such a great draftstman. This scene is so expressive and makes one want to pick up the book right off the stands to find out what happens within! Great addition!

Having the Buscema and Sinnott shine made these covers have the classic Marvel look and feel of high drama as readers could only guess at what was to come within. Maybe Don Blake sees it's really Tony Stark under the mask and the Iron Man who's been fighting beside him is a Doombot / Life Model Decoy for all these years! Or Don Blake is going to give Doom the makeover he really needs before going back on the Donahue show.

Dr Blake (aka Thor) is horrified to see the face of Dr Doom! I'm sure you are NOT horrified to have this piece in your collection. Congrats!

If you look at Doom from the back of the artwork, you can allegedly see his face.

Read your description but this cover merely proves what a wimp Thor is. One look at an ugly face spooks him out.

Holy moly, I think I have this issue...! Thor severely outmatched in terms of wiles, and Doom even looking brawny, such gravitas. Stellar cover.

Oh man, what an amazing cover by John Buscema and Sinnott! Two legendary Marvel characters being created by 2 legendary artists. The expression of Dr. Blake sells the moment and the inking of Dooms mask really draws the eye to tell the story. Absolutely iconic and memorable. It's awlays nice to see the differences from the original art from the published and just adds to experience of collecting original comic art. Big congratulations!!

Lots to love here, with Dr Doom taking his mask off and Dr Blake revealed. Cheers on a great cover piece. Not something I would normally take such a close look at but it drew me in with the beautiful art that has an image which tells a big story.

Man, seeing the majority of the pinup/posing that the publishers have been asking their artists to do on covers for the past 30+ years is very sobering when I look back at classics like this and suddenly remember that there was once a time when the covers were actually used to promote dramatic moments and scenes depicted within the story inside the comic the cover was attached to! In this case, I've always found the Thor/Donald Blake portion of the cover to be the kick ass "bonus". I mean, we all love hero transformation scenes, right? But I've always felt that having Doctor Doom in the foreground, from a three quarter view, ripping his mask off and swinging his arm back to put the mask right in front of the reader as we wonder about the secret of his hideously scarred face and what it must look like, is the sweet strawberry on top of the delicious cheesecake! Drama and action like you've never seen it before! Excelsior!

It's so amazing how the inking can either put the character on the page, or have them in another state all together. The Thor image appears to float in another realm, and is denoted as such by the limited heavy inking.

JB was The Man at Marvel in the early 70's. He took over the regular art chores on both Thor and FF from Kirby at roughly the same time, late '70/early '71 (while he was already kicking butt on Avengers). Having the FF's arch nemesis on this Thor cover was a nice tie-in between the two titles. Another great addition to your comic art museum. Congrats!

This has always been one of my favorite Thor covers by Big John. Was Doom's face that scarred that Blake had to transform into the thunder gos just to escape. What a striking image! Congratulations!

Whoa - this is a Big John masterpiece!! Such a brilliant cover design - I love how you don't see Doom's face, but you really do ... and you don't see Thor, but you really do. Such a well thought out and executed classic Marvel cover. I wish I had the opportunity to pick his brain about how he came to the design. Wonderful addition to your magnificent collection, and thinks so much for sharing this piece (and all the other gems). WOW!

Buscema truly impresses with this cover and the facial expression on Doctor Blake says it all. Makes me want to know what he looks like! Your description is spot on in regards to the size of Doom right down to those signature gauntlets. Congrats on an absolute beauty!

Only his second cover/issue on the title and Big John demonstrates how well he rose to the challenge of following on Kirby's footsteps! By the way, I tend to prefer the romantic theory that there is only a tiny scar on Dr Doom's face, but that his ego is so big that he cannot stand the idea...

Truly a wonderful cover from a classic comic I picked up from the quarter bin as a kid. This story might have read similarly had Jack Kirby stayed on a few more issues, as (I think) it was only years later that Jack expressed his take on Doom's face in interviews:
"...he's a good-looking guy, and he only has a tiny scar on his cheek, but because he's such a perfectionist, he can't bear to see that imperfection. He isn't hiding his face from the public, he's hiding it from himself."
At this point, Doom's disfigurement was still canon.
Also, I always loved Dr. Blake's bedside manner during the reveal:
"Oh no! NO! In the name of heaven-- I never dreamt-- it would be-- like THAT!! There's nothing medical science can do! NOTHING!!"
Just refer Victor to the patient portal, Don!

Epic showdown between Doom and Thor, and my first interpretation was that an unmasked Doom scared the living Thor out of Donald Blake. Congrats on the pickup!

Every time I come to look at your CAF, I am captured by the continuous masterpieces that you allow us to admire, even this cover depicting the mighty Thor facing the ruthless Doctor Doom, drawn by the supreme master Big John and inked by the brilliant Sinnott, is an expression of how the great masters of the comics worlds are able to express art in its maximum explosion.
