DescriptionTHOU SHALT NOT PASS! Here's the wraparound cover to Thor #1 (Vol 2). This 1998 relaunch of the title, part of the Heroes Reborn event, featured a defiant Thor as the last Avenger standing against the villainous Destroyer. Though the Avengers lay defeated all around him, Thor still stands, wielding his mystical hammer Mjolnir as a shield against the Destroyer's energy beam. It's a stunning piece of work by the fabulous team of John Romita Jr on pencils and Klaus Janson on inks. IMHO, it's an epic cover worthy of the son of Odin!Social/Sharing |

So much power in this piece. And it works even better when you can see the back half.

Stunning doble-sizer, by Odins bristling beard ! JrJr's run that started the 2nd Thor series showed not only his love for Kirbys stuff but also great bombastic epic art from his best period, especially combined with Klaus Janson ! The Destroyer armor was always one of the best Thor villains and rightful and nice included in the first movie ! Only weird thing here is Cap's 1940s shield :) But it'ssadly not a panel page !!

Everything is great about it. Plus you have a lot of Avengers laying wounded (I guess) on the ground.
Congrats!

This was my favorite Thor cover that JR Jr did. The sheer dynamism and power of the image is almost overwhelming. Congratulations on owning this great cover, my friend!

The only thing better than a JR Jr. cover is a wraparound cover. Congrats.

Everyone talks about Simonson's Thor. And with every right to. But JR JR's Thor grabbed tight to my growing imagination back in the 90s starting with this very wraparound cover image. It is one of the most memorable covers of my comic reading experience. I bet it looks even more magnificent in person. Nonetheless, thank you for sharing it here on CAF. I look forward to seeing it pop up on Bill's weekly Comic Art Live spotlight of his favorite art of the week.

KRAKA-THOOM! Thor vs Destroyer were among my favorite Thor stories when I was a kid. JRJR had a fantastic turn on the run, and I really liked his take on the Destroyer. Implacable, with those crazy force beams. This is a great wraparound cover. I mean, look at that cast! Big congrats!

Oh my god, are you serious!?!?! You know, I once heard that she sells seashells by the sea-shore. But hot damn, Bill, you buy bombastic battle covers by the bushel!

Great cover Bill! I cannot believe this came in 1998. Me thinks' if memory serves things looked mighty bleak for Thor at the end of this issue.

I like that John Romita jr, who is kown for his bombastic action scenes, can dial down the energy for an image of tranquil serenity like this one. It takes versatility and a keen design sense to bring pathos and drama to a soothing scene of the Avengers taking a nap. Challenging times like these call for relaxing and placid art that doesn't imbalance the humors!

Really nice cover Bill! I enjoyed the Romita Jr. Thor series the most (by far) of all the Heroes Return books back in the day. I remember seeing awesome pages for sale on Spencer Beck's website and wish I had pulled the trigger. I am thankful to be able to see wonderful examples like this on CAF. Thanks for sharing, and congrats!

Good heavens - this must be an absolutel STUNNER to see in person! The large (DPS) size, as well as all the Asgardian fury flying around make for a particularly potent combo! You almost have to squint to look at the right side page here, with the energy exploding all over the place, and then on the left you have the large, dark figure of the Destroyer blotting out all light... SO powerful. Another amazing piece which found a worthy home in your epic collection, sir! What a score! Congrats!

With comment 64, as of now, this is the most commented Thor piece on CAF! I say congratulations are in order! Flagons of mead for all! Seriously, though, Bill, this is truly an outstanding Thor AND JRJR example. One of the artist's and character's best cover images. So much energy and JRJR's "blocky" style fits the grandness of these characters so well. So much energy here, WORTHY of a #1 cover and the Thor most commented top spot!

Allow me to join the chorus of voices saying WOW! This is right up there with the whole Enemy of the State Wolvie run and ASM covers in the JRJR/JMS run in terms of memorable images for me. This cover really stands out in a legendary career- we all have our favorite JRJR covers, but this deserves to be on anyone's list. Phenomenal piece!

Odd's Blood!! The Destroyer chews up the scene (and the Avengers) with one of Kirby’s greatest designs ever—a perfect fit for JRJR's talents, huge congrats!

Wow! Between the dark inks in the foreground and the beams ricocheting from Mjolnir, JRJR knocked this composition out of the park. I bet it looks three-dimensional in person!
