DescriptionHere's one of the pieces I picked up at this year's San Diego Comic Con. The 1971 cover to Marvel Tales #34 by Gil Kane and John Romita. This was only the third cover Kane and Romita worked on together. The first two were ASM #90 (Death of Captain Stacy) and #101 (The first Morbius). The Vulture is drawn huge here, his wings extending out of the frame and over the masthead. The figure of Spidey is also large, breaking out of the frame as he falls backwards. I love how the cover blurb is lettered in perspective on the side of the building below them. The whole drawing is perfectly composed and Romita's inks are lush and gorgeous. I couldn't be more delighted to add this beauty to my collection.FYI, This cover was exhibited in the 2018 Society of Illustrators show, "The Art of Spider-Man." Social/Sharing |

Wow! That’s a show-stopper. Love the combo of Kane’s dynamic anatomy and Romita’s lush, textured inks. So much depth on the page! And love that classic Kane pose as Spidey literally breaks through the cover—nobody did action like Gil!

I could study that Spidey all day long. The figurework and linework are just vintage Kane/Romita. You obviously enjoyed your convention weekend. Just wish I was there to meet you. Congrats on this beauty!

Standing tall on the loftiest peak of Spidey artists are Ditko, Romita, and Kane/Romita... all others are the foothills. Here's a perfect example of what made the Kane/Romita artist pairing so compelling... what a wonderful cover!

Man, another killer add, Bill! I love how, like here, these older covers incorporate the character images with the lettering! Here, the breaks in panel make for a grand splash effect that makes you wanna do what a cover is supposed to make you wanna do...open up and see what's inside straight away! Congrats!

Another spectacular Kane cover. I love the way he drew both Spidey and the Vulture partially coming out of the black cover frame in order to get that 3 dimensional effect!

Congratulations on a classic cover by two of the greatest Spider-Man artists! The layout with the Vulture's wing breaking the frame at the top and Spider-Man at the bottom is incredible!!
