DescriptionFrom the second season Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Fred Wolf Films) episode "Enter the Fly." In this scene, Raphael is looking over his shoulder hoping to find Shredder. This is another great Raphael cel, and it shows a rare instance of him holding his sais in the traditional way, instead of holding them by the handles (as is the case in most other episodes). Another great thing about this cel is that it shows off more of that technique that was cut out of the frame for the actual episode. This is a handpainted painted acetate cel layered over background print. In this case, the the supplied background is significantly different than the episode context, making it look like Raphael is standing near a tall brick wall, rather than a junkyard. These cels were sold framed in mats and protective plastic sleeves at various toy and department stores throughout the early 1990s under the "Animation Art" label. This cel was scanned outside the sealed plastic sleeve, so the image clarity is clearer. Also attached is a screencap from the VUDU digital copy, showing the approximate cel in its final form at around the 19 minute, 05 second mark. Social/Sharing |

Neat character centric cel from the animated series! They at least had the good sense to have big character images to sell through retail outlets.

I really varied. I don't think much thought was given to how "good" a cel looked," but it would be an interesting subject to hear about if anyone who worked with the promotional deal gave an interview. TMNT was surely one of the few popular cartoons that sold old animation cels at retail outlets.

I've never seen a cel with just an arm or a leg or a full character missing body parts, so they did have some sense not to damage the brand.

Bought mine at Target during a closeout sale of them.
Awesome that you know the location of the cel in the episode it appeared! I had no idea the backgrounds would be incorrect.

I have a lot of fun theorizing about which cels come from which episodes, then re-watching them with attentive eyes!
