Description

Here's what I like to call the "magnus opus" of Marco Carrillo's "puzzle card" art, a stunning 12-card commission he did for me this year inspired by the 1991 Data East "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" pinball game!

I wasn't sure if there was any artist in the world that could re-interpret the sprawling Data East pinball playfield (originally illustrated by Kevin O'Connor) into a new work of art, but the talented and visionary Marco found a way, adapting the various character placements into trading-cards. It was hard for me to re-align all the cards for a proper scan! Even after upload, the composite image seems too tall to display properly on the website, so I've included several scans of just the top and bottom 6 cards in Additional Images.

All together, Marco gives us a fresh look at Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello, Raphael, and Casey Jones as they try to rescue April O'Neil and Splinter from the captivity of Shredder and his Foot Clan ninja! Marco even incorporated some subtle little nods to the game with the spinning pizza, shuriken throwing stars, bumpers, and action line art to simulate the playfield's ramps.

The top-three cards were late additions, impressively compressing the iconic back glass artwork originally painted by Paul Faris, with some obvious inspiration from the 1990 live-action movie but keeping April O'Neil's iconic yellow jumpsuit from the toy line and cartoon.

Marco humored me with several rough drafts trying to please my imagination on this one, and I'm pleased to report this piece got lots of views and engagement when he shared it on his social media pages!

Among the Additional Images, I've uploaded several conceptual layout sketches Marco sent along with the cards and a scan of the verso side of his custom-branded PSC sketch cards.
