DescriptionHere’s one of the most iconic images of Daredevil ever. It’s from the third issue of the Marvel Knights’ Guardian Devil storyline, considered by many to be one of the most important runs in modern Marvel history. Guardian Devil was written by film director/writer Kevin Smith, penciled by Joe Quesada and inked by Jimmy Palmiotti. Drawing on Matt Murdock’s Catholic upbringing, the plot centers around a baby born to a teenage virgin in Hell’s Kitchen who may or may not be humanity’s savior. When the baby is given to Matt to care for, unearthly beings show an undue interest, while Matt’s whole life begins to fall apart. His former lover is threatened by a terrible secret, his law partner is accused of a horrible crime, and the whole city is endangered by a mysterious menace. Over the course of the eight-issue story arc, Matt’s faith in God is shaken, along with his faith in himself. This cover depicts Daredevil perched on a church steeple. The cords of his billy club are entangled with the cross, much as his own life is entangled with his faith. Around him loom the grim smoking chimneys, weathered brick walls and rusting water towers of Hell’s Kitchen. Daredevil himself is cloaked in shadow, reflecting his deepening anxiety and concern. It’s a powerful image and has been used for the cover not only of Daredevil #3, but also as the cover for a Trade Paperback and a Hardcover edition. In addition, the image has been reproduced for a Collector’s Statue and recreated on film for the third season of the Netflix Daredevil TV show. It’s an absolutely gorgeous piece of art IMHO, and I’m delighted to add it to my collection. Signed in the art and again in the lower margin by Quesada and Palmiotti. What a classic DD scene. Really enjoyed Kevin Smith's work on the character and always thought Quesada really nailed it on this one. I didnt know they made a statue of it too though, that's pretty awesome, Congrats!

Iconic image. So much outstanding work poured into it, and one of the standout images from the groundbreaking Smith/Quesada/Palmiotti series. DD, NYC, the church...oozes that atmosphere. As you noted, beed used multiple times, including in the original Affleck flick! Big congrats, Bill!

As you say quite well, heavey symbolism. What is DD without Hell's Kitchen wooden water towers and a church steeple?

As many times as it's been used, I don't think the colorists ever quite did justice to this piece. Absolute gorgeous inks by Palmiotti. Congrats!

Quesada's best cover ever??? Quite possibly! The linework alone is some of the most incredible and intricate that I've ever seen. This is an amazing iconic piece of comic history! What a cover!

There's something about a Quesada/Palmiotti cover that goes beyond artistic collaboration. As with the team of Lee/Williams, I think there's a level of both creative and personal trust that really shows in the finished art. Love the details and overall mood of the image. My only nitpick would be that I wish the piece was done darker (with more blacks) instead of relying on the printing process for that effect. But as is, it's absolutely gorgeous! Congratulations sir!

Big sacrifice because of how beloved this series was and this being the best cover from the run! Marvel Knights was the spearhead of Marvel coming out of bankruptcy and hinged on Smith, Quesada, and Palmiotti's success to bring about a new direction for the company. This cover presents so much greater in black and white and can be considered a masterpiece by just the strength of the artistry.

Bankruptcy might have been one of the best things to happen to Marvel because this run put Marvel back on the map for a lot of people, me included, and the Bendis/Mack/Maleev stuff that comes after was fire. The no crossovers, focused storytelling during these years was great. This was the first issue I picked up and it's easily the most memorable cover of the run.

Magnificent cover, Bill. Congratulations. Worthy of an Artist's Edition.
I didn't care for this DD story and felt at the time that it undid a lot of earned moments from Miller's Born Again story but its faults have more to do with Smith than Quesada/Palmiotti, who brought their A-game with every issue. There's a reason why their work on this run has stood the test of time.

This piece summarizes Daredevil in one perfectly crafted image. His faith being the foundation of his being but the greater city looming around him with its grime and corruption almost suffocating the image and his face hidden by the darkness within him. A wonderfully drawn, inked and laid out composition. What makes it even better is the writing was good enough to pair with the art. Really a wonderful addition to your collection. Congrats Bill!!

Being a big fan of Mike Perkins, attention to detail in the BACKGROUNDS is something I always look for in other artists. This piece is a fantastic example of that and to me personally, is the star of this show. Arguably the greatest cover of the run, so very befitting one of the best collections i nthe hobby. Kudos, Bill!

What a cover! This was my favorite cover of the Smith/Quesada run. The architectural detail is just staggering, and the entire picture is anchored by the melancholy figure of Daredevil. Congratulations!

Now that's a cover! Such an iconic image of Daredevil perched on a cross, and the shots of the statue and TV scene show just how much the shadows add to the pose (which can't be replicated in 3D). Congrats on the auction win!
